New to Yanmar

Hi all. I'm JT and new to Yanmar and "REAL" tractors. Introduced myself (Nubee from Northern Indiana) in the Introduction Forum, figured I best do it here as well. I have a 1980 Yanmar 2310, 3 cyl diesel. Had it for about two weeks and love that thing already. Have 6 acres to mow and a bunch of trees to deal with and feel this tractor will be the ticket for those chores and many more. I just didn't get an operator's manual with it, which stinks. But have learned how to operate it pretty good so far. Just don't know anything about the oil's or the level's or adjustments. This thing fires right up and runs quite well and everything seems to work, like I think it should. Hope I'm right on that part. Anyway, I'm sure I will have some questions as time goes. Thanks for being here.

Tires look like similar tread to mine althogh those are a larger tire all around than my 2000 it appears. Nice front weights!

Yep. Sorry about that. It's meant for my Powder Coating pics, that I post from time to time. I forgot that I had my resizer program setup for that. (Kustom Powder Coating by CAT). I can re-do them if it's preferred.

No i dont care and really nobody else does. I just thought it was weird, if someone labels pics its usually their name or something. Like i would have thought you would have put JT or JTW or something i just found it odd. I doubt that anyone will try and reclaim your tractor pics though, i have not everthought about watermarking mine and was wondering why anyone would, but if your posting business related images i can see.

I do have a couple of questions. When I disengage the rear PTO, is it supposed to stop turning or does it continue. Also, the guy I bought it from said the switch/button under the clutch pedal was not working, so he disconnected the wires. Should this be fixed? Don't like things that don't work like they are supposed too. Thanks.

It may continue to turn for a few min/sec. & then stop. The switch is to make sure the clutch is pushed in B-4 trying to start the tractor incase the tractor happens to be in gear

Sometimes those clutch switches can be freed up with a penetrating oil and start working again.

does your tractor have the 3 speed PTO? on my 1700 the arrangement between engage and neutral are very close together, I sometimes overshoot neutral position and may take me a couple times to find it, One time I must have driven the tractor for several days when my wife notice and ask me was this shaft suppose to be turning? I have a safety shield that keeps me from seeing the PTO shaft while setting on the tractor

My PTO is a 4 speed. Neutral is pretty easy to find, so I know I'm not leaving it in any gear. It just seems to always turn, with no attachments coupled to it. The mower will keep it turning for awhile, but then does eventually come to a stop. But with no attachments, it seems to turn all the time. It could be the nature of the beast, but I don't think I want to grab it to find out if it will stop. :laughing:

Don't grab it! A friend of mine got hurt that way. I've seen draggy PTOs before and it is a temptation to want to touch them....don't know why. It could also catch the cuff of your pants. Of course that's not a problem if you farm in shorts. Mine has a PTO cover. Don't know where it came from. It looks sort of like a tapered tin can is all. Somebody probably makes them.

As for a PTO turning when it isn't in gear......some do and some don't. Not much power to it, but there is the momentum of the heavy shaft and gears in motion. You can lever a 2x4 against the side of the PTO shaft to get an idea of how hard it is turning. Mine will stop with the slightest pressure from the 2x4.

Depending on how cool/cold it is, which i doubt anywhere in america, minus alaska, is right now. There is fluid friction in the sump and just the "current" created in the fluid will turn the shaft, but you can stop it with your hand its not engaged. Its like a boat prop in neutral still spinning from movenent in the oil.

The other thing is if there is not the correct fluid in there, like say a 90wt gear oil, it will proably turn even in the summer due to extra thick fluid. You should have fluid that meets the John Deere 303 spec. If its a new tractor to you it may be a good idea to change it. Wash the screen off and go by tractor supply company and get the Travellers universal tractor fluid and change it. A 5 gallon bucket when on sale is $35 and is $40 regular, It will take ~4 gallons.

Thanks for the reply. :thumbsup: When I got the tractor, the owner said that he had just changed the oil's. When I pull the dip sticks, the oil looks clean and clear (for oil), so I'm going to say they have been changed. He did say the PTO had 90 weight. Good to know the amount in the PTO, as I had no idea, as with the engine. Since John Deere used and from what I understand, still does use the Yanmar Diesel, I should be able to find that out. Want to add Sea Foam to the oil and fuel pretty soon. So will look at doing that. Man, I love this tractor. I'm finding myself trying to find things to do with it. What an addiction! :laughing:
