Maybe the PTO attachments use 90 weight in their gear boxes, but I think that your PTO need to be in the hydro fluid that is in the trans. Just a thought but I am not an expert.

I use Rotella 10 or 15W-40 engine oil in my 1700, and also use the JD-303 for the transmission and hydraulics system, just as Clemsonfor said the 90w oil you are using in the transmission could be the problem, it is possible that windage drag on the gear components is moving the PTO...,.

Thanks guys, it sounds like I need to go talk to the past owner again. Need to know these things that he has done. Hope I was wrong on the PTO.

Thanks for the reply. :thumbsup: When I got the tractor, the owner said that he had just changed the oil's. When I pull the dip sticks, the oil looks clean and clear (for oil), so I'm going to say they have been changed. He did say the PTO had 90 weight. Good to know the amount in the PTO, as I had no idea, as with the engine. Since John Deere used and from what I understand, still does use the Yanmar Diesel, I should be able to find that out. Want to add Sea Foam to the oil and fuel pretty soon. So will look at doing that. Man, I love this tractor. I'm finding myself trying to find things to do with it. What an addiction! :laughing:

You just found your problem, your tractor should not have 90Wt anywhere but the sterring box maybe and the front axle if its 4wd! The PTO and tranny are the same sump and should be a JD 303 speced fluid. Way thinner than 90wt. Its i think a 10w-20 weighted fluid, but not sure, i think i read that on one of the bottles. This also is not motor oil. Its universal tractor fluid.

The engine oil is 15-40 or 5-40 (deisel rated oil) whatever you prefer. Its 6qts i beleive.
