So I bought a new toy for moving some material around my property. I found a used (but new to me) hydraulic dump wagon, its approximately 10' long by about 4 feet wide and almost 4' deep.

So my question to my fellow TBN'ers is the rear gate only has a grain chute, there are some holes and a bracket that tell me it previously had a swinging gate. Now this wagon is going to serve dual purpose but having a swinging dump gate would be fantastic. I was thinking of getting some 1/2" steel plate, some lag bolts, and a long piece of pipe. Bolting the plate to the top of the sideboards and cutting a hole in an ear that sticks out past the sideboards and run the pipe through it with a bolt on each end to keep the pipe from walking out of the ear. The pipe would then be fastened to the gate by some means to be determined. Any body have any suggestions or ideas on how to make the rear gate hinge?

Have the gate pivot rods (1 on top, 1 on bottom) held into a horizontal "U" with a pin through the open end of the "U."

Then the gate can be either a dump gate or a conventional tailgate, depending on which pins you pull.

Wouldn't having 4 pins put alot of pressure on the bottom of the gate if I put something fairly "fluid" in it like corn? Unless I used a removeable top and bottom pin somehow? Maybe a plate with a welded pipe and the pins slide into the pipe?

I'm eventually thinking of a clasp or quick release to make it work for dumping dirt. For corn or oats I was thinking of leaving the gate in the slats and using the grain door on the back.

any ideas how to make a quick release mechanism for a dump gate? maybe a cable actuated set of fingers?

Well, Im almost done with the Dump gate! I know everyone likes pictures, so here is the progress! I used 2x6's for the main door, 2x10 for bracing, and gas line for my hinge and for my release, the release isn't finished yet. Not bad for a whole day worth of work.

Very nicely done! Nifty way of making the hinge set-ups.

You may want to cut those excess bolt threads off to save your flesh....but I bet that you have thought of that.;)

you know its funny you mentioned that, because my hands are all cut up from handling those threaded ends! :D I didn't want to cut them off until i was sure i had enough length! (I did measure but stuff does tend to happen for some reason)

moored4 and foggy, thanks for the compliments!

I did a little bit of figuring and i came up with about 180 ft^3 of volume without the side boards, which if I figured correctly will give me nearly 10 tons of weight if i fill it full of dirt  I may need to look into starting to acuire some heavier pieces to rebuild the bed if I break it!
