What maintence should I do on my tractor after the initial break in? I am planning on changing the oil, checking air filter, greasing all the zerks. The manual says to change the hydraulic/transmission fluid and filter as well as the front axle fluid but my dealer said not to worry about that and just change the oil. Should I change these as well or just worry about the oil? I don't mind changing these if need be but don't want to bother and buy 10 gallons of fluid if not necessary.

My dealer, who sells and services a lot of tractors, says the factory service intervals for hydraulic fluid are very conservative. Lots of equipment seems to do just fine with extended hours on the hydro juice.

Maybe your dealer probably has had the same experience. It probably has a lot to do with how hard the equipment is used.

Personally, having spent a lot of money for good equipment , it doesn't make much sense to me to then cheap out on the fluid replacement schedule just to save a (comparatively) few bucks. Just my opinion.

Beside, treat the maintenance as 'me' time and hide out in the garage for a few hours with some cold one. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif That and a bit of relatively inexpensive maintenance items can save you alot of money and heartache.

I would follow the manual. Not that the dealer doesn't know what he is talking about, but, the manufacturer wrote that manual. If anyone should know... they will. My manual says to change the oil and trans fluids and filters at 50 hours. After that first change the durations are a lot less frequent. Like another poster said, when you're talking about the tractor lasting and what you paid for it.. the service is well worth it.

Change all the fluids, and the filters. Reason? The tractor is new, the parts have been getting mated during the break in period. There will be new metal gathered up by the transmission magnet, and maybe some still floating around.
After that initial break in period, there should be less metal since the parts are supposedly now mated and the new metals worn off.
The better the break in and ultimate maintenance, the longer and better your tractor will live. John

I had been told that it was not necessary to change the fluids either but I went ahead and did it at the 50 hour service. I am glad that I did. Like some of the others have stated a new machine has a lot of loose metal and shavings in it and I was surprised at how much was on the magnet and especially how much was on the hydraulic screen. I have to admit though the hydraulic fluid that came out of it looked brand new.

If nothing else it is cheap peace of mind.
