Ford 1700
Hi All!

New to the world of owning our own tractor, and found a 4wd Ford 1700 with a loader+5' mower + drag-blade (I think it's called? Angle blade?) for 3k, and couldn't pass it up. Yes, the previous owners said they burned out the clutch by running an irrigation pump... but still, 3k for all that?

Anywho. I have my clutch kit on order, and we've been painting and rehabbing the old girl. I'll be draining all the oil, and transmission fluid, new filters, new oil in the injector pump... all the things.

I DO have a question though, I blew off the breather/plug cap on the injector pump while I was pressure washing the engine, and I'm not sure if the cap broke, or how it's supposed to get back in there. It also looks like it has a bit of grease in there, but maybe it's just old oil, I'm not 100% sure. Pics here: https: //photos.app.goo.gl/YRi2eCEXkfDDJNtWA

Anything else I should do while I'm in here?

Excited to be a part of the community, and owner. Looking forward to all the good and bad years =D

Congrats, clutch replacement should not be difficult task and parts are readily available. The cap is a cover for the hole on top. it is just a breather cap. I would take a bottle cap and hot glue it there while being careful not to plug the breather hole. Grease looking film is just the old dried up oil. You just put same crankcase oil in the injector pump. it will be around 2 oz of oil. You got top breather plug as a fill, drain in the bottom and level hole/plug in the middle. We have bunch of info on 1700 that covers a lot of stuff.

JC,

Hey JC! Thank you so much.

Yep, found a clutch replacement kit for 120, and planning on splitting it open this next weekend.

Is the breather hole the little almost-divot in the top of the plug shaft?

"Kit for 120"....like in dollars?
That can't be much of a clutch kit.
I did the clutch in my 1920 (bigger sister to the 1700), and as I recall the total OEM parts cost was around $300.

I first bought parts on E-Bay, from Complete Tractor in Michigan.
BIG MISTAKE!
POS !!!
Parts were Chinesium..... and lasted a total of 2.5 hours.
THEN SPLIT TRACTOR AGAIN!!!

Lesson learned the hard way!
ONLY use OEM Ford (Shibaura) internal parts.... ALWAYS.
Use afternarket parts....on the outside of your tractor!

Haha, already in for a dollar,
picked up this kit. Hopefully it'll last longer than a few hours... I think the 1920 has a double pad, right?

Yes....the 1920 does have two clutch discs!
Your 1700 does seem to be a much more basic clutch.
Yesterdays Tractors is a good outfit!

Crossing my fingers! 🤣

Anything else I should check while servicing it? Engine started right up and we were about to barely drive it up onto the trailer

Clutch release bearing usually is changed with a clutch. It's the bearing that rides on the fork that is moved by the foot pedal and presses against the fingers of the pressure plate....Not necessarily a gotta do but since it's a sealed bearing (usually) grease dries out.

Spin it with you fingers. If it runs smooth and you don't have a replacement then gotta do what you gotta do.

If you don.t already have a new pilot bearing, and a clutch release bearing....GET THEM, BEFORE you begin the job!!

yes, that's correct. Pretty much what you buy is China made , even some OEM made there with higher specs. when You get a kit it come with release bearing , pilot bearing, pressure plate, friction disk and an aligning tool. Replace all and don't leave anything old behind. Mine after 40 years and 1300 hrs has the original with 90% disk thickness left. I would not hesitate buying like what you have done. Good luck, you'll be fine. Take pics as you go along so you can retract your step. Sometimes I take a card board and draw up bolt pattern and as I take the bolts our poke them in hole to match the pattern if the bolt are different size or lengths just for clarity. one reason that the price is good is that it same disk dia and other specs are shared among many tractor which always a good thing.
