kubota L3400
I purchased a Kubota L3400 with a FEL last spring. With winter approaching I am contemplating getting tire chains because I want to be able to use the tractor for snow removal. I have a gravel drive that is about 500 ft long and most of it is at about a 30 degree angle. There is not a lot of sun on the drive in winter so if there is any snow pack it turns into ice quickly. I want to get chains for my rear tires for better traction on ice but since my tractor is 4 wheel drive is it necessary to also add chains to the front tires? :confused2:

:welcome:

I wouldn't get on that steep drive on ice even with chains.

Are you sure it is that steep?

A 30 deg slope is 58% grade.
I have a 12% grade on some of my drive, which is less than 7 deg angle. And that is plenty steep. With snow pack or ice, you will slide back down if stopped on it with the vehicles. That isn't any fun if you are on your tractor.

Don't let me scare you off. You asked about tire chains. They are good for winter and you will need added weight to keep them working right.

I would chain either the front or the rears and try it and see if you need to chain the other. You can always buy the other set. Chains make a big difference.

I'd recommend getting rear & front chains. With ice, slope and FEL you are going to need all the traction you can get. Last year I got rear/front chains and they make a BIG difference! Suggest looking at V-links. However, note that V-links may damage concrete and asphalt.

My jeep has an indicator that shows inclines and it bounces between 25 and 30 degrees as I climb my drive so you can see why I am concerned about ice. It sure keeps the riff raff out in winter.

Have someone take some pictures when you get some snow, make sure you have plenty of ballast and put chains on all 4.
