Hey. I've never owned a tractor before but now I do. I am nearly 62, retired US Navy, and getting ready to retire again. My wife and I bought a 16 acre property, with a unfinished Log Home Kit. The property is 12 acres of flat pasture, and 4 acres of wooded slope leading down to a spring fed creek. The farmers field next to us looks like is planted in beans. The soils is mostly sandy loam, prime farm land. The property has not been cut since last summer, standing in 3-4 feet of grass / weeds, right up to the front door of the cabin. It has been a chore to knock it down with my Craftsman rider. After cutting back about an acre around the house, we came to the conclusion we needed more tractor. We have a construction power pole, and an agricultural well (not permitted for potable yet) The cabin kit was erected, but has not been wired or plumbed. I will be retiring at the end of this year, and will be able to dedicate more time to getting the home completed. Long term we plan to finish the home as our forever home, plant some fruit trees, have some bees, and maybe a couple of goats. We plan to ease our way into this farming thing, but there is plenty of work to be done where a tractor with a FEL will come in handy. I picked up (stole it I suspect) a 2001 JD 4200 with a 420 FEL from the original owner, with 175 hours use spreading mulch and such around their home in the country. They used to have a gravel drive so it also came with a 5 foot LandPride Drag Box.
I started this out by saying "I've never owned a tractor before but now I do" and so I am here. This site was instrumental in helping me make a reasonably informed choice of tractors, now I just need your support learning to use it. Have a great day!
