New Tractor & Paint

I was wondering how many folks receive their new tractors and find a few spots here and there where the paint has been chipped and a small rust spot is already starting. This is the case with me (3 week old tractor), and I suspect that the places where paint has been chipped were the places that the tractor and loader was rigged down for shipping. Is this common?

So, **** me wants to cover up these small spots before they become large spots. Am I just being silly, or should I really condsider doing this?

Touching up a vehicle is standard operating procedure for a dealer to make their products look as good as they can look, there is nothing uglier to me than something nice and shiny with a chip, ding or scrape. I know just how you feel

Hi:

I don't recall any chips or anything (except on the implements) but my dealer (without asking) gave me a can of JD Green Paint (More for the implements I think) to touch up any spots I had or might get in the future.

I bought my tractor with 36 hours on it. I got to go see it on the job where it was accruing the 36 hours. I saw some spots of rust. When it was finally delivered they had all been touched up. I think many dealers do this.

My dealer did not touch up any of the spots. Most small chips are on the loader. There are a couple on the front axle, and as I mentioned earlier I believe they threw chains over some of these spots to secure the tractor for transport.

When we make it through this variable spring weather pattern, I think I will do some touch up. I am not sure what to get for primer yet.

If there's any rust, use Rust Reformer (Rustoleum product) or a NAPA product to react it to iron sulfide, a black substance. Then apply the paint over it after it dries and hardens.

I haven't had any significant paint chips or rust spots on the tractor. The LX4 made in Canada has has paint chip away on it. The whole top of the gearbox is paint-free now. It has enough oil on it from the breather that it never rusts.

Ralf, is Rust Reformer a primer? Do you know what the NAPA product is?

My last tractor when I purchased it; it had some hail dings in it. I just kind of figured it was as is type deal but when I got the tractor the dings were gone. I asked him what happened to thing and he said he took the hood off and took it to the local body shop and fixed them. I guess I never expected it. They were pretty small.

I actually have a bottle of Extend. I've used it on small rust spots on my truck. In this case I wire wheeled off what rust I could, applied Extend, then touch-up paint after the Extend dried. Can't really say this all worked as well as planned though as many of my touch-up jobs reappeared a year later.

On big areas I've used MAP gas to cook the oxygen out then prep/paint. It does appear to work. Rust that gets deep into iron/steel doesn't leave because we spray something over it, at least not for me..

I'm just as **** as you and many more. The exact same situation occurred to me recently when I picked up my NEW JD 4520. The loader had several paint chips and the decal on the right side had a tear at the top, I assume from shipping and installation. When I was there I also noticed several other tractors with loaders ready for pick up and had the same similar paint chips. I'll also ask, is this normal? I know over time these machines are going to get scratched from time to time, but I, as many others, just spent almost $27K on this machine, which is more expensive than most cars. You would except a newly delivered car from a dealer with rusted and chipped paint.

I agree , i told my dealer i realize the hoe and loader may have a mark or two , as i know these things haft to lifted with machines. but i told them . if the tractor had one scratch i would not except it. as you said. all the stuff i bought was 25.900 and when you get it , it needs to be new.
loader bucket had a few scuffs. everything else did not have a scratch.
I was pleased...

I guess it must be from shipping. I've never thought about it before, but does JD ship anything in crates? I think I can remember seeing loaders, tractors, etc. at Kubota dealerships in crates. Maybe JD doesn't, and everything gets chained down on flat beds. Anyone know?

My 400 CX loader was shipped in a wooden crate. So I know that most of the chips and scratches must have occurred during installation.
