It looks like I'm about to pull the trigger on a new CUT, most likely a Cub/Yanmar EX3200. I can get a new one, with a FEL for $14,800. I have a 8N, 60" Big Bee Brush Cutter, cultivator, and scrapper. I have a few questions:
1.) With the 8N, I ran a slip clutch with the Big Bee. Is this necessary on a modern CUT? There is no type of clutch on the cutter. The PTO shaft goes straight into the gearbox. 2.) I would like to put an after-market canopy on the tractor. Any brands you guys would suggest? 3.) Are the Quick attachment adapters worth their price? Thanks for your patience and your help.

Old tractor new tractor no matter you still want to run some kind of protection for the tractor, slip clutch or sheer pin will work.
I don't run any QA adapters for the 3pt but several folks do with good sucess.
The canopy I have is a this one Wells Ag Tractor Canopies Insulated Steel or Aluminum Canopies It is the steel one and quite heavy but works well.

Question #3 - I bought Pat's Easy Change and it was well worth the money! If you are attaching/un-attaching by yourself often, you will really love a QA. I do not have any experience with other types/brands, but the first time I used Pat's I just smiled real big!

You say you used a "slip clutch" with your 8N. Are you sure you wernt using an OVERRUNNING Clutch?? I think this is what you may have used to prevent the rotary cutter from pushing your 8N. You will not need an overrunning clutch with a current CUT....the problem is solved long ago.

Now a slip clutch is different....it protects your tractor driveline and engine from shock loads due to hitting stuff with the implement PTO. A slip clutch or a shear pin is needed with most PTO implements.

I also endorse the Pat's ez change. Check it out before spending on any other set up.

That Cub/Yanmar EX 3200 is a pretty nice tractor. Pretty similar to my 790 but with better hyraulics and a hydro. I looked at those tractors.....and I think they are pretty nice. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the replies. All this is new to me. I'm sure you are correct about the type of clutch. I was told it was to keep the brush cutter from pushing the tractor. The 8N died and I had it taken to a local shop. The mechanic that picked it up looked at the PTO and said words to the effect of "good it already has a clutch on it. We won't let them leave our shop without one." Whatever type of clutch it was, it is on the PTO shaft. I thought it was the PTO shaft. Guess I've got a lot to learn. I inherited the tractor after my grandfather passed. I've never used it for brush cutting, only plowing. The cutting I've done has been done with newer tractors. Again, thanks for the help.

No problem Sockwell.....and welcome to TBN. Tractors change alot over time....and dont worry about not having all the answers on this stuff....there is a lot to know. Also, I am a little careful about whom I get my information from...as there is oftentimes as much bad information passed about as good. I think everyone means well...but sometimes information is misinterpreted, mis-stated or erroneous for some other reason. I find the lookup (search) feature here on TBN to have lots of good information on topics. Simply type in a key word and lots of reading to be had. Also, you may want to fill in your bio....it helps with advice from others. Good luck with your new tractor. :)

Typically where the PTO shaft meets the gearbox you will find either a slip clutch or a shear bolt. If (or more likely when) you hit something with the implements blades....... it's the job of the shear bolt or slip clutch to protect your tractors drive line and engine. A clutch is nice....but these need to be maintained to work properly. Many feel that for smaller tractors (like you and I have) that a shear bolt (pin) is adequate to protect the drivline. Allthough they are a bit of a PITA to change.
