I am considering buying a new tractor, maybe a JD. Are retail prices usually negotiable with JD dealers? Any tips on how to negotiate, waht discount to expect? Thanks!

Negotiating the price of a tractor is similar to buying a car. Do a little research on the model of tractor you are interested in before. Get brochures, ask other owners, and determine what you want to do and on how much land to arrive at what tractor suits you the best. Like a car, a tractor that is great for one person may not suit the needs of another. A great place to start is reviewing the TBN archives by doing a search.

Tractor prices are negotiable but determining dealer cost is much more difficult to find. See what others on TBN have paid for same make and model. Prices may differ from one area of the country to another. Like cars, price is influenced by make and model, time of year, new models coming out soon, number of tractors on lot, options on the tractor, dealer's reputation, overall demand, competition, etc. If possible check out 2 or 3 different dealers and compare. Good luck in your adventure!

Check out the JD website. You can configure and price a tractor there. This will give you list price. You should be able to get 10-15% off this.
Also, if rental returns are available in your area, they are usually a good deal and still under warranty.

For instance, the JD web site lists a 4100 HST @ $12,500.00 I got quotes from about 10 - 12 different dealers from a high of $15,500 to a low of $11,300. The high guy was going to give me a "Deal" on it by throwing in some implements "free". The low guy was just plain honest. He said he wanted my business.

Talk to as many dealers as you can and find one that will spend the time with you. Take your time and believe me if you are looking at a new unit patience is a must. Try to buy all your equipment in a package and make sure that they are comparable from dealer to dealer.

I did not buy from the lowest priced dealer. It cost me a few hundred dollars more to buy from the dealer that treated me the best. It is money well spent.

Have to agree with the sentiment that price is not the only thing to consider when purchasing a tractor. Dealer support and honesty are worth their weight in gold. As to the price end of the equation, check out jdlawns for their pricing. You will find it to be quite a bit below retail, and should give you a better idea of where the price should be.

D Land,

Ask your self what kind of work you need to get done. Then find out which implements can be used to get the work done. You might have to read through the entire Attachment discussion area to get a handle on what the various implements can do. Once you figure out the implements, you can see how much PTO HP they require and you can size your tractor. Then you can start pricing things....

The JD, Kubota, and New Hollands/Case are good tractors. Other brands maybe ok as well but I did not research them so I can't comment. The key is the dealer. How easy are they to work with? How do they treat you? How CLEAN is the shop? Would you want them to work on YOUR tractor? How helpful is the parts department?

I have got a good dealer. They are not perfect in some ways but neither am I. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif If they mess up they fix it. I wish I had a car dealer as good as my JD dealer......

The dealer is a big part of a tractor purchase. You will be going back to them for parts and service. And very likely you will have to go back to buy new implements.

Hope this helps...
