I found what I think was a great deal on Craigslist and picked up a Bear Cat Chipper (with a blower) for $800. It had homeowner use only, looks practically new though it may be 10+ years old. The seller ran it for me on an old Ford tractor and it sounded good. I'll try fitting it on my BX-24 later this week. I have the manual, but is there anything else I need to know? Any advice about either sharpening the blades or a reasonable place to get replacements? After I try it out I'll probably take it apart and deal with the blades, perhaps belts too. Anything else?

Vicar..... I saw that ad, and believe me i thought hard about making the drive down there from NH. The thought of it being a beat up junker kept me from going  . Glad to hear one of us got a great deal! I would pull the knives and take them to a good chainsaw shop to have them sharpened. I had the knives done on a previous chipper of mine for about 8 bucks per knife. Check the maual for the knife-to-anvil clearance when you put them back in. Aside from a few squirts of grease, i can't imagine it needing much else. Post us a few pics when you get a chance !!

I found a Gravely ProChipper, same type of deal, light homeowner use, similar price range and it works great on my BX2350.

Mine is triple belt drive, so, if yours is belts, take the cover off and be sure the belts are in good shape and definately ADJUST them.
Mine ran fine initially (or so i thought) but after adjusting the belt tension there isa noticeable difference.

If multiple belts, they need to be replaced all at same time, due to keeping all of them near the same tension.

Good find!

You might go on-line and look at the Woods 5000 chipper/shredder. It is similar to one model of the Bearcat. If it matches yours then a Woods dealer would be another place to get parts.
