So I was at an auction over the weekend and picked up a used Howard HL40 al tiller. The only problem was that when they were moving it out the barn, they bent the PTO shaft. So my question is how do I fix this. Can I have the shaft straightened? Or will a replacement shaft work? Thanks for all replies.

I bet you got a good deal on that tiller. Put a little money in it and it will be worth it. I bought a Howard HR6 48" last summer. It looks similar to yours only in a little better condition. I would just replace the PTO shaft. Mine is just a standard 6 spline female connection on each side. If you have to struggle with the existing shaft (looks pretty beatup) to get is on an off your tractor it is just not worth it.

They bend it after you won it.. or before?

As long as the input shaft to the gearbox or drive is not damaged ( seals or bearings.. ) I'd look for a replacement shaft.

I was told that it was bent when they were setting it back down on the ground. I think the PTO was hanging down and bent due to the weight of the tiller when they set it on the pallet. They did say that everything was working and fine before they bent it. I only paid 100.00 for it, so I figured if I spent another 150 for a shaft and a couple cans of paint, I could clean it up and have a nice tiller.

Tractor Supply, Rural King and Agri-Direct all stock a shaft like that. They are longer than you need. You cut them to fit. Check the HP rating. They are rated by HP.

Oh, you got a great deal! I doubt you'll have any issues once you put a new shaft on it.

Thanks,
I was looking for where I could get a new shaft.

I have a Deere 2210 tractor, and I did have to cut my PTO shaft down a little for my Howard Tiller. I have read that if the shaft is to long it may bind during 3 point height adjustment and cause internal damage to the tractor.
