Hello, Considering buying a new Toyota 4Runner. What is everyone’s opinion on undercoating? Vehicle will driven in some salt during the winters.

I’m interested in some sort of DIY product. Maybe Fluid Film? I would like to spray the new vehicle as well as my older truck, etc.

Any input would be very welcome. Thank you!!

I've had undercoated and rust proofed cars and trucks for many years. I found the biggest problems are in the hidden pockets of the body, and the frame area where most coating was used didn't matter in the long run. I used Fluid Film as a complete underbody, frame, hidden pocket spray starting about 6 years ago. I found the frame spray wears off quick anyway, and decided to leave that area alone when I reapplied each fall. For the past 3 years I've settled on a simple routine in late fall. I use a couple simple aerosol cans of Fluid Film which is enough for 3 vehicles. I fog/spray some inside each door, tailgate, and along rocker panel areas that are entrapped. Any area where you've seen cars or trucks with rust is where I focus. I mainly use existing holes or plugs to get the straw inside and spray for a few seconds. That's it. FF creeps into the nooks and crannies and lasts a long time in those hidden pockets, which are the most important up here in the rust belt. If I don't wash my truck I will see the oil film gradually creeping out and around the outside painted areas, even a year later.

Toyota had frame rust issues in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I’m guessing they are going overboard on the undercoating and steel quality now. I’d skip the dealer undercoating. Spend the money on a car wash that does an undercarriage wash.

I have found anything a dealer supplies you can get done by a specialist for at least half the price, tints are a good example, dealer had a 'special' at $800, we paid $270 at a tint and windscreen shop.

If you can find a shop that applies it; check out waxoly I have it on my truck and am pleased so far.
They should be using two different products, one is used in the doors and channels and a heavier one on exposed surfaces.
I had my RAM done in "15" and it still looks very good on the entire underside of the truck.
It is getting thin in a few spots I think I'll take it in next summer for a touchup and reapplication.
