New well pump, no water

I spent the day replacing my well pump. The pump is at 240 feet and the static water level is 50 feet. I also installed a sand separator. The pump runs, but no water. I suspect it's air locked. Any ideas? I hate the idea of pulling it again.

Sorry wrong question in last post. If your water level is at 50', I would consider raising your well pump from 240'. How deep is the actual well?

Well is 300'. Original pump was at 260' but we got A LOT of sand.

I always fill the water line through the pitless before I put it in, It makes for extra weight though, wells around here are generally less than 100 feet though. Really don't know if it's needed, but's that's how my grandad did it. Never had a problem with an in well pump. Could you have gotten a defective pump???

if your not getting water out of the line at the top of the well then my first thought would be the check valve especially since pump is running

Are you thinking the check valve was put on backwards?


Our well is about 340 feet deep (water level is around 50').. The pump was about that deep (not really sure how deep though) and connected with the pitless adapter.. When it was pulled last year to to replace a few items ( the check valve, install a sand filter, and anti-torgue kit) they did not 'pre-fill' the the line with water.. the pump just filled it when it came on..

either backwards or is malfunctioning for some reason. just put new pump down 200 feet in a new well for my daughter and did not have to prime.I have helped do a few pump replacements and have never had a problem getting water. i did have one issue with my daughters though. i had 115 volts going to both wires wires to pump but pump wouldn t run. i called my father looking for ideas and he said check for 220 across wires and did so. guess what , i only had 115 volts. traced problem back to panel. son in law put the 220 breaker where it apparently wasn t getting full 220. I am not great a electric and thought if i had 115 on each line then i had 220 .I learn something new everyday !!

Have you checked it with and amp meter to see if it is running? This will let you know if the pump is actually running.:thumbsup:

Did you install an in well sand separator (like a Lakos) that installs around the sub pump or an above ground near your pressure tank? I dont have any experience with the in well separator so if thats what you installed then water is not getting inside the casing (housing pump).

if you have an above ground separator then I would:

First as others have said check the voltage preferably at the well head (remove the wires and check for 220V). Then if thats good, I would pull the pump resting the pitless adapter on the top of the casing, then have someone start the pump - you should see water gushing out.

If no water at this point then I would pull the pump out all the way and determine why its not getting water.

I always run a pump above ground in a garbage can or similar before installing to check amperage and flow rate.

Others have said it but not clearly.

A submersible pump does not need to be primed. It will flood the pump and the line above it to the water level as soon as it is installed. If it is not getting water, then something is wrong with the pump (checkvalve that is part of it).

Air lock? Only if the output pipe is blocked and not allowing the water to push any air in the line out of the pipe.

I, too, suspect that the pump is not running.

Does it have a control box? Check to make sure the control box is properly connected to the yellow, black, red wires. Also (and I have never done this) there is a possibility that one of the wires was crossed at the pump, for example yellow to black. A few quick checks with an ohm meter would tell you.

If it's a two wire pump make sure you are getting the proper voltage. Also, there is only one 115 V submersible pump on the market, make sure yours is 230V and it's getting 230V.

Also, as mentioned, the check valve could be installed either backwards or for some reason is stuck. Seen a stuck one once, was hard to troubleshoot.
