Tractor
Ford 2000
Hey everybody, I don't know if I'm in the right place, but it's a repair so I figured I'd be good.

Anywho, I'm needing some help, tractor is a 66 ford 3000. It has the 4spd trans. What I'm needing to know is where the safety switch is, and how it should work.

I think I know where it is, but I'm needing clarification. There's a push button on the dash under the key (left side) but then there's another push button on the trans (to the left of the gear shift) I am assuming one of these is the safety switch but not sure.

Original owner (or whoever last wired it) had light wires ran to the push button under the key. Which correct me if I'm wrong, the light switch should be the pull switch on the right side of the dash correct?

Story is I wasn't getting fire with the key in the on position. Ran a new wire from the coil to the key, ran fine for an hour or so, then the new wire burned up. Decided to do a whole new wiring harness for the tractor because whoever wired it last did a terrible job (and I think a wrong job.)

Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance!

Unless someone swapped the trans with an industrial 4 speed, it's probably an 8 speed. 4 gears with hi/low. Good move on buying a new harness. Theres no sense on chasing shorts and bad connections when a new harness is only $60.

On a gas tractor, there shouldn't be any push buttons. Light pull on the right, choke and ignition switch. Neutral safety is in front of the left stick.

Well I don't know, the man I received the tractor from gave me a bucket full of parts.. in the bucket was a shifter that looks like it's supposed to go to the left of the gear shifter. It does seem like it's stuck in "high" mode.

Lol and I didn't buy a new harness I made it from scratch.

Can I take pictures and maybe have you verify?

Thanks

Sure, post up some pictures. Maybe we can help out.
Be carful if your burning up wires, you don't wanna :fiery::fiery:
You have a lot more patience than me. A new harness is plug and play with the instrument cluster, VR, netrual safety and everything else.

Im an electrician by trade, and have repaired tractor and vehicle wiring harness' before... My advice, even if you already made one, and the factory one is actuly only $60, buy it. No way I could make one, or repair one, for $60.

Problem with buying one is, a gas motor's harness can't be bought, I looked. All they have are diesel harnesses that have to be modded to work on gas motors.

It was only one wire that burned up, and I believe I know the reason why.

I just need some help with this switch thing. I'll post some pics

Top left open hole is for the key. Top right open hole is for my choke

This here's the "other shifter" in the bucket of parts I got.

That looks like a factory cap on that other shifter hole to me. Does that tractor have a PTO?

As for the harness, send them an email and tell them you need a harness for a gas tractor. Its been a while but I remember using the thermo-start wire (diesel harness) for the coil on my gas 3000 and changing one (maybe 2) positions on the ignition. I sold the tractor but my buddy has been using it for the last 2 years.
