Generally idling a diesel down to allow to cool is for a turbo. If you shut a turbocharged engine down quickly, it also shuts down oil flow to the turbo. Not a good thing if the turbo is turning high rpm.

Hope everything worked out alright.

Considering the age and unknown history of our Yanmars, I would have the radiator professionally cleaned internally and you run some cleaner through the block, too. Catch the runout in a white bucket so you can see what is leaving. My 240d runs cooler on more water than antifreeze. So watch your mix. Some problems are solved by improving 3 or 4 seemingly minor issues. I learned that the hard way since getting my Yanmar. I agree with all of the above suggestions, try more rpms, belt inspected for wear and fit then tightened if needed, clean debris from exterior, check radiator for air flow, lift cutter to lighten load, use air hose to lightly blow debris back out the front side. With cold engine, wash radiator fins. On a warm day, run with no thermostat to see how the temp is. That T-stat is just for warming a cold engine, so pull it after lunch if you are working morning and afternoon. Don't assume that any parts on your tractor, are the right ones for your model.

The manual recommends 2200 rpm to run a pto implement:

I use a 4 ft Howse mower but my grass isn't as dense as you are describing. I can often take the full 4 ft cut in 7th gear except uphill like shown here, where it has to be a 2 - 3 ft cut or else stop and use 6th. (With the oversize tires these gears are little 'taller than standard.)

Cleaning the radiator is essential - with it clean it shouldn't overheat.

Y'all don't have thermostats.

Most of the time, the needle is at about 1/4 of the green arc. On rare ocassions, I've seen it up to 1/2 green. I've never seen it above 1/2 scale except during that mowing job in the Kansas heat with the screen full of fluff and dragging a 5' JD 305. I don't know what those gauge positions translate to in terms of degrees.

Since the engine has a thermostatically controlled cooling system, it tends to come up to temperature fairly quickly and holds a stable temp over a broad operating range. I know a lot of these tractors don't have thermostats and some don't even have water pumps. I'm assuming mine has a thermostat, but I've not had the upper hose off and seen it. The parts book shows a part at the proper location and the number, 129350-49530, crosses to a part that Hoye calls a "thermostat".

Tom, just for future reference part number, 129350-49530 is the thermostat housing cover, the thermostat part number is 129350-49800.

Thanks, Danny. My copy of the parts diagram isn't exactly clear in that area, and my Japanese reading skills are non-existent. The number I quoted looked like it was pointing at what looked like it ought to the be a thermostat. I appreciate the correction/clarification.
