BingBling : Car margins versus tractor margins. . . did you think that is because a typically car dealership sells significantly more cars than a typical tractor dealership, therefore it can work on lower margins?
I think you need to shop price, but you should also feel comfortable with your dealership. Personally I won't buy another Deere product, but that is COMPLETELY the fault of my local dealer. I have a couple pieces of JD equipment that work fine, but were purchased before I moved to my current home. Now the local Deere dealers treats me like an alien. I went in for a tractor bid this past summer, looking at some of the 4xTEN tractors and couldn't even get a second of their time; I was comparing against both New Holland and Kubota (all 3 dealers are within 8 miles of each other and I had a check book with me to pay on the spot). That is a dealer problem. But that said, if you buy from the cheapest guy, and you need service and you go to the local guy, you may be on the bottom of the repair list. You might be able to get the local dealers to match a price from someone else.
I really think want to be comfortable with your dealership. Just my 2 cents. At my local J.D. store, if I couldn't get someone to sell me a tractor when I had money in my hand, I sure didn't get that warm & fuzzy feeling that they would care about fixing my tractor when/if I need some support. Like I said, that is a dealer issue.
All told, I am thrilled with my new tractor and glad I bought from a dealer who drove it off the truck and right into my garage. The sales rep then sat at my kitchen table and went through the entire manual with me and then took me out to do a full inspection and final familiarization tour of the tractor.
