This JD400 seems to be manufactured in Germany but since itエs from -68 I expect that not a single thread is metric.

Living in Europe I have a multitude of metric tools but a very limited set of large SAE (inch) wrenhes and sockets.

The service manuals state that the following larger (> 1/2") threads are used: 9/16", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1-1/8" and 1-1/4". Being a total newbie to tractors and not used to inch threads, I have no idea what head and nut sizes these threads correspond to.

- What wrenches and sockets do you think I should get for the large bolts and nuts?

- Do you think I should go for 3/4" or 1" drive sockets?

Industrial JD 400 was built in Dubuque,Iowa not Mannheim,Germany. Wrench size will be determined by what bolt/nut you desire to remove. Some metric wrenches will fit on a few of the bolts/nuts. 19 MM & 3/4'' are identical

Here's a comparison from SAE to Metric wrench sizes.

Wrench Conversion Chart

If buying a SAE socket set a 1/2" drive and 3/4" drive sets should handle every nut and bolt on your tractor.

Thanks for your input!

Are these the correct wrench sizes?

Thread > Head/Wrench size

9/16" > 13/16"

5/8" > 15/16"

3/4" > 1-1/8"

7/8" > 1-5/16"

1" > 1-1/2"

1-1/8" > 1-11/16"

1-1/4" > 1-7/8"

The bolt size is not the same as the wrench needed to tighten or loosen it. The hex head size is larger than the bolt thread size.
The SAE bolt thread and the hex wrench sizes are different. For example: a 3/8" diameter thread bolt usually uses a 9/16" wrench or socket, 5/16" thread bolt uses a 1/2" wrench to tighten.

Most standard 3/8" drive SAE wrench or socket sets may include a 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and maybe even 1" sockets or wrenches. These sizes fit the hex head of the bolt. They are not the bolt thread size.
