Furikawa CD5B
Hi all, I have just signed up to this forum.

I am an Aussie expat living in Laos. I have a Furukawa CD5B bulldozer. It's a great little machine which handles just about any work I can throw at it. Obviously, it cannot handle any heavy duty work but I find it ideal for building access roads around our (coffee) farms, levelling ground, and removing basalt boulders. Until recently, I have always had it serviced and maintained by a mechanic but I have started to do my own maintenance, primarily to save a few dollars here and there.

Time has come for a full service, which naturally includes changing all of my lubricants, but one item has me stumped and I thought someone here may be able to advise. I have asked elsewhere but nobody can give (or has given) me an answer. The lubrication sticker on the machine calls for the lubricant in the main clutch case to be 6 litres of "clutch oil" but I have been unable to ascertain what oil type this is. I know my way around engines reasonably well but I have never before heard of clutch oil. Repeated Google searches have failed to offer any suggestion and posts on other bulldozer forums have also yielded nothing.

The oil that is currently in the clutch case seems to be a fairly light oil with a reddish tinge, and looks very similar to automatic transmission fluid as used in cars.

Can anyone here guide me on this?

Thanks, James.

I'll take a shot at it be beware I haven't a clue what the Furukawa was designed to use. Most tractors I read about use hydraulic fluid for the tractor's wet clutches.

Thanks for the reply, Bob. The term "clutch oil" is confusing in itself. That term would imply a wet clutch but I'm pretty sure the Furukawa has dry clutches... an assumption backed up (but not confirmed) by a post here dating back to late 2013 by "Bird Watcher".

But a thought just came to mind (I'm having one of those embarrassing moments of "I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner") that the clutch in question is probably the engine to gearbox clutch, and not the steering clutches as I was assuming. If so, it's quite possibly a wet clutch. I'll take the footplates off tomorrow and check exactly which clutch I am dealing with. If a wet engine-gearbox clutch, then it will probably take non-friction modified 10W oil.

where are you getting parts for the machine, wouldn't that also be a resource for your question? what does your mechanic say?
