a used 2004 GT 3235 - had to swap in a new short block
It's me again... I missed out on buying the used 1862 that you all gave great reviews on.

BUT now there is a 2164 for sale with 250 hours for $900. Is this a fair value?

Being new to all of this... is a 2164 more sturdy/rugged than the 1862 I missed out on since 2164 is numerically > 1862?

I'll be using this on a 1.3 acre lot that has some steep slopes due to a basement walkout.
Also, I will be pushing snow in the winter down a 130' driveway.

I really appreciate all of your patience with me guiding me through a tractor buying process.

Jim

Are you sure it's not a 2165? If so, not a bad machine, it's got the briggs motor, I personally like the Kohler commands more. You can put a blower or blade on it and it will push them OK.
Not nearly the machine the 1862 is, don't rely on the placing of model#'s!
That is low hours for a 99....test drive it around, see if you like it.....I would try to get it for a few hundred cheaper. Good luck!

Jim, the model numbers get confusing, if you have the interest you could look at one of the Cub reference sites that show all the series and model #'s.

There are tons of used Cubs so the best thing you could do is narrow down the choices by what you need/want the tractor to do and how old is OK for you. Older Cubs are very capable machines so it really depends on whether you want to do some basic repairs and keep an older machine going, or want to go newer. I'm guessing from your posts you want newer, so I'm going to assume that 1862 is about as old as you'll go. That series was made through most of the '90's and are very strong machines, with power steering and hydraulics. The roughly equivalent tractors in newer models would be the 3000 series made from I think 1999 on, and there are some newer 2500 series tractors that will do the work you are looking for.

I own an 1864, and to me that would be a great tractor for you, mid '90's vintage. Am I right you don't want to go older than that? What is your target max purchase price?

Hi Dave,
THanks for the advice.

From what I've learned in the past week (starting with no knowledge) is that a 1990s 1862/1864 is probably as old as I want to go.

Price range is ideally < $1200, but I'd spend $2500 for something really new (just saw a 3135 w/170hrs for $2800 posted).

Do you know of any websites besides TractorByNet.com that could give me an overview different models/years?

I'm pretty mechanically inclined with old CJ Jeeps and hoping I could figure my way through a Cub Cadet (plus I have a brother in law who just got certified as a Case IH mechanic on the big combines and tractors).

Thanks,
Jim
