Go for the 2500. They are tougher and very solid machines. My yard is hilley and uneven in places. I think a 44 deck will do you fine. I have a 44 on my 2518 and I mow 2-3 acres.
I would go with the 05 if you can get a deal on it. I think the metal hood is better than the plastic ones anyday.
The 54'' deck will let you mow/trim closer to ditches and banks.

I have the 44 in deck because that is what my tractor came with when i purchased it. It does a fantastic job couldn't be happier with it.
Also my shed door isn't large enough for a bigger deck size.

My opinion is get whatever size you feel is right for your particular need. The 2500 is a great machine and you will be happy with it. My model was the first one of the 2500 series when they were introduced in 2003.
I have had a few minor problems which were taken care of right away.
Whatever model you decide on you will be getting a quality built, durable unit that will last if properly maintained.

Don't know how the heck my old post got revived, but yes i did buy the 2500. Actually a 2554, 2005 model left over from last year. I got the dealer to cut the price some for last year's model, paid 3500 for it. i like the metal hood also.

After a season of work and mowing, its one tough tractor. I have a hill on one side of my property that keeps washing out. So I put sod on it and seeded some. It's pretty steep probably 15% grade. My 2554 pulled a 500 lb lawn roller up it with no problem at all. Like to see a belt drive do that.

Probably because I bought a left over 2554 2005 model last month too.
Mine was 3500 for the tractor and the 54'' mower also but I added a tiller , a front blade and lug rear tires for a total of 5050.The dealer threw in 2 free suitcase weights on the deal.
I have no doubt my 1966 and 1967 850 Bolens belt drive tractors would do that without any belt slippage.
They will spin the back wheels before a belt will slip.
