Yanmar 240D
Hi Everybody
My name is Marnus Steyn and I have recently joined this forum. I live in South Africa and am now the proud owner of a Yanmar 240D. The Tractor is in very good condition considering it's age and it is clear that is has not been abused. Although I have been exposed to farming all my life and have operated many tractors I am not familiar with the Yanmar. I know JD, MF, Case, Ford, FIAT and a number of other tractors but have never worked with a tractor using a thermostart (glow plug). I have researched the threads on this group and have gleamed the following startup procedure. 1. Decompress and crank until oil pressure buildup, 2. Activate glowplug for approx 20 seconds, 3. Decompress and crank. 4 Release decompression lever and the tractor should start.

Is this correct?

The second question I have relates to the plumbing of the thermostart device.

On my tractor there is a hose leading from the thehermostart to a small container/reservoir and then there is a hose connected to the other end of this container but that hose is loose (not connected to anything else). From the forum I have gleamed that Diesel is ignited by the thermostart. To what is the reservoir supposed to be connected?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Marnus

hi Marnus, welcome to tbn.

your starting procedure is correct. However, it shouldn't be necessary to use the TS in warmer weather, say above 50F.

Regarding the plumbing of the TS system, all hoses, which there should be three (on yanmars I've known), should be connected. One hose (down) to the TS element itself, which is in the intake manifold. Second hose (going across/up) to fuel tank egress. Third hose, (across down) to fuel line going towards injection (i think, if i remember).

What's in the resevoir now? Anything? Without diesel going thru the TS element, it probably isn't doing very much...

If you think it would help, I'll take some pictures of my TS setup and post here... it'll be awhile tho, probably a day or two since I'm away from tractors at this point... Let me know. Good luck.

Hello spyder2,

Your information outlined in the first paragraph is basically correct...there may be slight variations depending on the owner, their model and environment.

The rear line is connected to the fuel tank fitting that returns unused fuel to the tank. You should see a small nipple under the cowl and near the fuel filler neck. If not immediately obvious you can also see it through an opening in the firewall near the same location. I don't own a YM240 but most Yanmars with thermostart are set up the same way. If I am in error...someone will chime in and let us know.

The thermostart reservoir has to be filled manually on the YM240.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. Looks look like 1Danny has the answer! I thought it strange that I could see no obvious place to connect the other end of the hose. It would still be very interesting to look at your setup arthr31. If you don't mind I would like to see some pics. Thanks

Here are some illustrations showing how it was originally set up on YM240. The reservoir has no inlet hose - you fill it by opening the cap and pouring in diesel.

Thermostart Diagram (in Options page, YM240 manual)

It sounds like yours has been updated to the reservoir used on later Yanmars. On those, the excess-fuel line from the top of the injectors goes to a second connector on the bottom of the thermostart reservoir, and also goes to the tiny return-fuel connector at the top of the main diesel tank.

Welcome Marnus,
The 240/2000 is a great unit.

Thanks to the info provided here I was able to re-plumb the TS and it is now working fine. With the climate we have in South-Africa it wil probably never be necessary to use but that is not the point when fixing up/re-buiding/restoring anything.
