Tractor
kioti nx4510
Hi everbody another new guy here looking to buy a tractor. I have never owned a tractor so I don't know muchbut have been reading a lot on here. I have been looking at the kioti's and was liking the dk40 with a cab but the dealer was saying he didn't think he could get one of them and he priced out the nx4510 with a cab also since he had one of them on the lot. I am looking for info on what everybody thinks about the nx model versus the dk's? I know the nx are the tier 4 and turbocharged but is this good or bad? Both these models are a little big for what I need but being comfortable in the seat is a big problem for me and the smaller tractors I am not comfortable at all. Any info or recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Thanks Josh

As long as you don't have to use DEF in it, I wouldn't worry too much about the tier IV engines. I wouldn't buy a tractor that required it.
Comfort goes a long way in buying a tractor. Get what fits you.

I agree on getting a tractor that you feel comfortable in. especially with a cab, make sure you have good vision out of cab being new to this make sure to test drive and not just set in cab look at loader and turn around to look behind you while operating. Personally I would stay away from tier 4 DEF or not a turbo is just away of getting more power would not have an issue with it. If buying new shop around and seek out what you feel suits your needs.

The DK's are getting very hard to find. Try calling some more dealers if you really want this model.

Check that the tractor is low enough to fit in your garage or shed, if you plan to keep it under cover.
I had a moment of panic when mine was delivered, and was greatly relieved to find I had 4" of clearance under the garage door.

I have read that the DEF system is the better alternative for overall engine performance, longevity, etc., since it eliminates the EGR and DPF. Is the DEF system only viable for the larger HP tractors only, say 175 and up?

Thanks

I don't think any of the smaller tractors run def but I am not sure. I would think they still run the egr and dpf even when they use def, I know trucks do. I am a ford technician so I deal with this stuff on trucks all the time, but I don't know how the tractors are doing with it on that is why I am asking about this stuff. I wish I had a Mahindra dealer close to check into them but the nearest one is 60 miles away, but I have dealers within 2 miles that are Kioti, JD, Kubota, MF, Mcormick, and a New Holland is 8 miles. But price and comfortability has drawn me to Kioti, and it looks like a lot of these tractors in this HP range are at the tier4 already.

Yes, I think the Kioti DK is the only tractor in this HP that can be found at all in Tier III, all the others are pretty much phased out. The DK is fast becoming hard to find new, you will have to look around. Very little experience here with NX, it's very new, but those that have them are happy with them so far. Be careful as the 40-45 HP Kiotis are big tractors, size is very much an issue. What do you want to do with it, and how much land are you maintaining?

The NX4510 does not use DEF, and is not turbocharged. It is naturally aspirated. So far what few operators that have the NX series seem to like them. You are a few months late on the DK series. Not saying you couldn't find one, but they have got to be getting scarce. The NX series will have lower emissions (cleaner exhaust), and slightly lower noise from the exhaust. There are a couple of other new features on the NX as well such as slightly higher hydraulic pump capacity.

I won't say it's impossible, but a few months ago I tried finding a DK cabbed tractor, and there wasn't a new one within 500mi of me (farthest I looked), or at least I couldn't find it. Finding one now will be even harder.

With that said, I spent a fair amount of time looking at the NX series, and was very impressed. The quality/fit/finish of the cab is a step up from the DK, they seem to be quieter, and a number of new features were really nice. The auto-throttle for the transmission is very handy, and should prove to save fuel as well (no leaving the RPM up while you jump out for a minute that turns into five).

I don't think Tier IV is a huge deal either way...yes, it's got a few more parts, but this stuff has been in service for quite a while in other applications, so it's not really an unknown. The engine will be quieter, and get better fuel economy, so it's not all bad.

I think the 4510 is a bit light on PTO power (just under 32hp) and going up to the 5010 makes for a big improvement (up to 38.9hp), so I wasn't going any smaller than that. The 5510 and 6010 have a larger wheel and tire size, which I like, so then I decided the 5510 was a better choice. Ultimately, I'm wavering now, and may be buying a regular backhoe instead (lots of dirt to move), but I kept notes on pricing.

Michigan Iron and Equipment (awesome folks) had the best prices around. A 5010 with R4 tires was $31,008. A 5010 with R1 tires was $30,927. A 5510 with R4s was $32,490. a 5510 with R1s was $32,418. I know you were looking at 4510s, but I recall a 4510 was about $2K less than the 5010 (right around $29K). For options, the CD player/radio was $250, the rear windshield wiper was $150, and rear remotes were roughly $300 each (I think the first one is a bit more, and the second a bit less, but $600 for both). Whether you know it or not yet...get both remotes :)
