In January of this year I relocated from 1/3 acre in the suburbs of Southern California to 14 acres in Walla Walla, Washington. I'm loving rural life and slowly climbing the steep learning curve involved in tending to a decent sized field and a long gravel driveway.
I purchased a JD3320 with a front loader from the folks I bought the house from, together with a Frontier LX5 bush hog, a Lands Pride GS1560 grader scraper, a King Kutter carry all and some forks. I wasn't sure what it was all for, but my sellers seemed pretty knowledgeable, so it seemed a good idea to pick up their equipment. It was a good thing I did. I've used all of it (except the forks) pretty extensively.
I like the tractor, mostly because it's relatively idiot proof. The field's gently rolling, with one hillside that's somewhat steep. I couldn't mow it without the JD's 4 wheel drive.
I just had about 80 tons of gravel brought in for the driveway and large parking/turnaround area by the house and pole barn. I used the grader/scraper to level and relocate the spread material and the front loader to distribute a couple of piles. The most useful tool for the driveway, however, was a drag grader, that one of the gravel truck operators loaned me. Think 1/2" rebar, welded into a 4" rectangular mesh, roughly 3' by 6' (its construction was more involved than that, but you get the idea). The thing was great for leveling the little ridges left by the grader/scraper. The only problem with it was that you couldn't back up with it, so getting into some areas was difficult.
That got me to thinking it'd be nice to have something that did the same job, but could be lifted. I'm seriously considering a landscape rake, both for the driveway as well as a way to clear the field of the bushy weeds we get up here. I'm also looking for a chipper/shredder to knock the weeds down once I've raked them up.
Anyway, great site - I've already gotten a lot out of it.
