Cleaner yes.

More reliable? Hard to get more reliable. I don't doubt that they will become very reliable, but not MORE reliable.

The early pollution control setups for autos in the 1970's gave us some truly awful cars. By the '80's engines were getting better again and today there are many great performing, clean running cars to choose from, but it took 30+ years for it to get sorted out. Maybe the transition with diesels will take the same amount of time, maybe it will happen sooner and maybe they'll never figure out how to make clean running, dependable diesels that perform well. Since people tend to buy and keep tractors for a long time, many figure it's just easier to get equipment before they become test subjects in this ongoing, involuntary experiment.

In the long run it will be a good thing for most (not everyone), and companies need a push sometimes.

I am not happy getting any new model as there will certainly be things that get improved on. Always are, esp with changes in technology.

But I couldn't find an l40 and I needed a tractor now so I bought an L60 recently in spite of that concern (not crazy about that aspect still).

So far loving it and love how exhaust free it is. Seems quieter too although I can't be sure without a back to back comparison.

The only real downside that I've seen (yet) is where hydraulic hoses get routed mostly due to the dpf displacing the fuel tank. I know, I am a broken record on that.....

I do not doubt for a second that the new diesels are very reliable and more refined. What will not be reliable is the add ons and in particular the electronics, sensors etc that are associated with the emissions. Because of the harsh environment of and engine compartment the electronics will be the killer.
