nh 1630 hour meter not working

i have a nh1630 that i purchased a year ago, used. the hr meter was working fine for a while but now its not. just wanted to know if anyone knows where i should start looking. i have checked the fuses and the connections behind the instrument/dash panel...

Is that one of them that uses the alternator as a tach reference? ( not a physical drive.. but a electrical ref pulse.. etc.. )

If you don't start investigating, you may never find out.

Start by checking your dash cluster.. perhaps look under the cowling to see if it has a standard driven tach cable.. or just wires... check out your manuals / service manuals, and try to trace the wire diagram.. or at least look at the tracers on the wires at the dash / tach, and see if they come out at an engine sensor, or to the alternator.

I'd pull, clean and re-seat each wire connection onthe alternator, and also, once started.. make sure the ignition switch returns fully to the run position.

thanks, i have done some looking via the owners manual and looking under the dash, not sure what to look for though. i have also contacted the local dealer, service, who has given very little in the way of help for diy. i will start checking the wires and connections,, thanks for the info..

On my TC40DA the hour meter stopped working at ~22 hrs. It was under warranty, and instead of just changing out the hr meter, the dealer changed out the entire instrument panel. I thought that was sort of an excessive action, but it was also an indicator that the hr meter fix may not have been very easy to diagnose, or they knew it was definitely in the meter itself, and it couldn't be removed from the IP very easily. So, it could be your meter. Good luck.

The tach and hour meter are electrical/electronic. The tach assembly as well as the gauges and lamps are replaceable within the instrument panel; the hour meter is not. Troubleshooting the circuit may well require the electrical section of the service manual.

Rick B; If CNH has to replace an hour meter; do they set it to current hours? Curious minds wnt to know. I would assume the replacement hour meter states it is a replacement somewhere.

I don't think the hour meters on TC's can be reset. We note the hours on the replaced unit on the work order where the instrument panel was replaced. Other series of machines with digital display hour meters can be set to reflect original hours.
