If you don't start investigating, you may never find out.
Start by checking your dash cluster.. perhaps look under the cowling to see if it has a standard driven tach cable.. or just wires... check out your manuals / service manuals, and try to trace the wire diagram.. or at least look at the tracers on the wires at the dash / tach, and see if they come out at an engine sensor, or to the alternator.
I'd pull, clean and re-seat each wire connection onthe alternator, and also, once started.. make sure the ignition switch returns fully to the run position.
