Greetings, I am a diesel newbie looking for some help. I have a NH 1630 that the previous owner had "overhauled" (rings, bearings, seals). It started once after that and ran fine for about a half an hour. After shutting down it will not start again. Engine cranks and fuel vapor pours out the exhaust but it will not fire. Brand new battery and starter so I do not think it is a slow crank problem. I am getting about 6 volts at the glow plugs. Is this right? Any advice will be appreciated.

Start with the simple things first. Make sure you have fuel in the tank, and that all your lines are tight and it is not sucking air.

The voltage at the glowplugs is a little low. My 1900 has 9 volts. I am assumeing you are turning the key counter clockwise to preheat the glowplugs before trying to start it. How long are you preheating.I preheat mine for about 45 sec.unless it is realy cold. What position do you have the hand throttle. It should be about half way.

OK, Progress so far:

1. Drained fuel and replaced.
2. Installed new filter.
3. Bled pump and inj.lines
4. Checked for and found current at fuel solenoid.

I warmed glow plugs approx. 20-30 secs. and have tried starting till the battery runs down and still nothing.I guess I will start back at square 1 and do a compression check. My understanding is that if I have good compression + good glow plugs and fuel it should start.

So far so good. How did you bleed the injector line? How do you knoe you get fuel to the injectors? Do you see fuel spurting out of the injector compression nut if you break them partially loose? glow plug+fuel+ compression should start the engine as long as injector fuel pump timing is right. Is your fuel cut off solenoid normally closed?

Take a compression check; Who rebuilt engine? Timing ok? Make sure air filter is not plugged.

Was it running fine and you shut it off or did it die.
