I was tilling my field as usual when I raised my 3-pt hitch for the 5' tiller all the way up and the PTO lever kicked out of drive and then the PTO shaft started to leak fluid at a very fast rate. I think i was significantly over the 25Deg angle limit from the tiller operators manual. I did not try to re-engage the PTO lever while the engine was still running. while the tractor is off and the rear PTO is not engaged, the PTO output shaft seems to have quite a bit of slop / play in it. however, when I attempt to engage the rear PTO lever (it wont let me fully engage unlike the mid PTO lever) the PTO output shaft locks up and I cannot spin by hand. Not sure if it makes any difference but this tractor is a HST trans. I hope i only need to replace the PTO seal.
What checks should i do to see how bad / far the issues is? I will be draining the remaining fluid in the trans to see if there is any clutch or gear debris in the case.
What am i able to replace without "separating the tractor"? Can I replace the PTO seal and PTO bearings by only removing the 4 bolt circle pattern around the PTO shaft? I have heard that on some tractors the removing those bolts can allow you to drop snap rings and bearings into the casing requiring the whole thing to be torn apart to fix.
