Hope i posted in right place.. I was looking to see how to replace the gear box ( the one that pto shaft and slip clutch attach too).. I have found a pdf for owners manual .. I see how to change belt but It does not go in to details on how to replace or rebuild gear box. Hopefully someone can point me in right direction!

I just did the belt on my 478. It was quite an ordeal for just a belt. I would assume it's the same process. When it shows you in the manual to go inside mower and loosen the bolts for the inside bearing I would also remove the lock collar on the shaft and the gear box should pull right out?

That is what i was thinking but then i saw a locknut on the back side closes to gearbox. lock nut was on sheave/pulley?(Not really sure what it is called) .I removed the 3 small bolts the bearing flange,(back side underneath) Unit popped back allowing more access but it not see a set screw to remove the lock so i can get bearing off and side unit out. Looking at exploded view on NH site appears long shaft (2 in picture) is fitted in to gear..When i Get home will posted a picture of locknut.

where do i find rebuilding spec?

hope that makes sense?

Just to confirm, you are still in the process of taking the gear box off?

If so the lock collar on inside bearing is probably an eccentric locking collar. It should have holes or notches in it. Put punch in hole and hit with hammer to spin off. Just talked to buddy who just had to take one off and he had to use torch to get it off...

The shaft will most likely be removed from gear box by opening gear box and taking snap ring off the end of the shaft by the gear.

Yes I am still looking to take off gear box.. I just bought a used 479 for parts. I could not get that lock collar off. I ended up torching off bearing and collar but destroyed the shaft.. I dont want that to happen to my 479.I was looking for correct way to remove.
