I'm looking for suggestions on what older model NH square baler my JD 3520 (30 pto hp) may be capable of running.

Thanks!

years ago the only tractor we had was a Farmall "H" which was close HP size to your Deere. May be a couple HP smaller and we run a NH Hayliner 233 with it. No big problems really. You have the advantage over the "H" with Live power takeoff and lower gearing. Our land is hilly, use your head for something other than a hat holder and you'll be good. We didnt pull a wagon behind our baler, dropped the bales on the ground and picked them up when we were done. good luck . . . John

Thanks for the reply. My main concern is my tractor is HST drive (the only thing available for a JD 3520 w/cab). The stress the plunger on a square baler puts on the PTO and drive line on a small HST tractor concerns me in the years ahead. One can always slow their ground speed, make equipment adjustments, etc. but the torque stress from the baler will always be their.

We had a customer who baled with a bx 25 for a couple of laps to finish the field when the big tractor broke. I was suprised that it could do it!

How much baling do you need to do?

Making all round bales right now (75+ acres) but would like to make around 10 acres of square bales. I have other (larger) equipment for the job, was just wondering which square baler may be "easier" on the 3520 with HST drive in the long run should I need/want to use it.

Thanks:thumbsup:

There are so many models that are out there used from NH but any of the smaller models would work fine.

I'd worry about the plunger throw as well and it is a good concern but with proper balasting I think you should be fine! Most older balers did have less strokes per minute and I think that should help here as well. For the most part the differences are the pick-up on a lot of them with the larger ones having wider pick-ups with more tines.

Thanks Art,

You've confirmed what I my thoughts were about the plunger and differences in the balers.

I baled lots of hay in the late 60's early 70' with a JD 420 and Ford model 520 or 530 baler (I think). The 420 was not an HST and it was around 28 HP. Not sure how much the plunger throw would effect the HST but HP wise you should have plenty.

I run a NH 315 hayliner on my Kubota 3010 with no problems.
