Unfortunately I didnt think of taking any pictures during the building process... but here are a few details:

We used 10" I-beam for the vertical, 1" plate for the upper mount and cutting edge, 1/4" box tubing for the wedge, 1/2" plate for the slides, and 3/4" plate for the base. we wanted to be able to use this with the forks on our tractor since we would also be using the forks and stumpgrinder on the same job. we used a 4"x24" Cross hydraulic cylinder but shose to leave a 30" opening for slightly oversized logs. Oh I almost forgot, we're in the sign business so we had to have it powdercoated virginia blue and make up a model number and replicate the NH logo to make it look like a factory unit.

I would have put some small pieces ont he base plate to hold the log in place under pressure. not really spikes but something to grip the end of the log to keep it from slipping ont he base plate when you put pressure on it. I think it looks sweet.

Looks very professional. I would consider putting some kind of non-skid/serrations/spikes where the bottom of the log sits to avoid kickouts.

Very nice. No stooping while running it, just raise the forks to whatever is a convenient height and change it as work requires witha push of a lever! That is the drawback to the commercial 'tip-ups'.

mahana and whodat : very good points and ones that will be addressed. we didnt want to weld spikes in place because of the difficulty getting big logs moved over them and into position, but we have had a couple instances where they would have been nice. dad's thoughts are simply a piece of rubber conveyer belt material should be sufficient, but i tend to think thats still gonna be pretty slippery when its wet. im thinking maybe just some grip tape or possibly something as simple as a few bolt heads. still looking for ideas on that one.

turnkey: thats what we liked about it. we had several 36" logs to split and werent looking forward to horsing them up onto a horizontal splitter. another nice thing about doing it this way, on those really big logs, you just stand them up on their end and drive the splitter under them. makes it nice when u have a whole pile of big ones to do.

keep the suggestions coming :)

whodat

run some beads of weld and or some expanded metal (perhaps leftovers from your grill project)

Cut a couple of 4 inch pieces of 1/2" re-bar and spot weld them to the center of the base about 6" apart. Don't think anything would skip off them. BobG in VA
