New to TBN and this is my first post. I bought a NH TC45D with a 16LA Loader and a Bradco 509 backhoe. The tractor has 1600 hours and the backhoe has little use. When I bought this package it was for the right price since the rear transmission was trashed. The case has been broken on one of the webs that houses a bearing. I am assuming this is from the backhoe as is the local NH dealer. I have found a used rear transmission case that is far less expensive than a new one from the dealer. My question is has anyone tackled the job of swapping out and rebuilding the rear transmission. I have turned a few wrenched in my day so I am not worried about that. I am wondering if there are any secrets or pitfalls to avoid. Thanks for any advice. Looking forward to being TBN member.

You're on the right track looking at a used case instead of a new one. Just make sure you inspect it thoroughly.

But before you start turning bolts, if you don't already have them, get yourself a set of manuals. The main ones are the parts manual and the service/workshop manual. The parts manual will show you where each part goes. The service manual will walk you through the job step by step.

Read, ask questions, and post pics....lots of pics. :D There are a lot of very smart people on here that will be willing to help.

And...Welcome to TBN. :)

I sure would like to see pix of the break in the case. I would guess that
the Bradco hoe was mounted on the 3-pt hitch, rather than on a dedicated
subframe.

What kind of deal did you get and where was it?

Thanks Mike I did get a copy of the parts manual so I have some good drawings. I looked into a service manual and they want $550 for one. Seems steep since that is about 1/4 the cost of a new case. Although a step by step might be nice I am a little reluctant to spend that kind of money on the book. Although I am only about $5000 into the whole unit with the backhoe I am gun shy on spending too much before I get a sold game plan and a good source for the parts. Here are a fedw pics of the case and where it is broke. I will try to get some better ones of the whole project. I might start a project thread too on the project page.

I have never heard of a manual that expensive, and I have bought many,
never for more than $150.

Its very rusty in there! Not a good sign.

Yup $529 since its OEM. No market for knock off books on that new of a tractor. If you have a good source let me know. No big deal on the surface rust. Its not pitted and remember the whole case is scrap. I has a good coat of oil until the heavy works starts.

I'd bet the same thing. It wouldn't be the first time it happened. Some of the dealers around here won't sell a 3 ph backhoe for this reason.

SKNNR-
I am about to split my TC40da to replace the rear trans case also. I paid $400.00 for the manuals. It looks like a straight foward procedure and an experienced wrench should have no problem. Main thing I got from the manual is to support the engine section from overhead, and block the front axel under the under the frame so it does not articulate. I can copy and mail you the pages from the manual. PM me with your address if you want. I cant scan them though. Where did you fine the used Case? List is $1350.00!

Djausin I pm'd the info. Thanks again. I found out from the dealer that the cause of the break was a PTO shaft that was too long. Got quoted $2600 for a new case from the dealer. OUCH. Still working on a used case from a local tractor junk yard. I'll keep ya posted

Skinnr:

Does NH offer manuals on CD-ROM like Deere does? The Deere manuals on CD are generally half the price of the paper ones. As I recall I paid $65 for my 4200's shop manual on CD.

I then printed it out for a copy in the garage and can always reprint pages that get damaged.
