NH TN75S, how do I remove rear axle housing top /w lift mechanism?

Hello everybody, Im helping out a friend that has some trouble with his implement lift, and when removing the smaller inspection plate atop the housing you can see a looste part further down that has lost its connection (possibly a threaded rod or something).
Now to the issue we came across when looking closer at it: how do you remove the top housing that holds the lift mechanism? We have got so far as removed all bolts and can lift the top housing in the rear end just enough to peek inside, but it still hangs on in the front end to something. Does anybody on here know with step we have missed? Peeking inside you can see a 'tube' around the hydraulic piston that seems to hang on to the gearbox housing. All help would be great!
Sorry if I have failed to mention something or given a poor explanation, I'll try and answer questions the best I can.

I'm not sure if it is the same as Ford, but the cylinder on those tucks slightly under the main casting at the front. So you need to slide slightly to the rear, sometimes a stuck piece of gasket can stop you. It it fairly heavy. There is a rod that goes to the bottom but it should slide out, however you may need to remove the side cover to be sure it gets back in correctly when you finish.

I have only removed one cover in my life, and it was last week. Aircommuter brings up a good point, you may need to slide it back to get out. Mine was that way. The only problem was I couldn't slide it back because of the feed tube. Once I lifted the front and got the feed tube out (passenger side front) I was able to slide it back and lift the cover. It is indeed very heavy. I used an engine hoist.
