New Holland TC40D
My TC40D (44 hours) is back in the barn after 2 weeks at my dealer with a 2 day visit from New Holland. This was the second repair in as many weeks for the same problem. ( no hst or pto power) (they replaced a shaft that had twisted and broken in the HST) During the repair they discovered that the PTO hydroulic pressure was set (at the factory) 80 lbs too high. (normal range is 260psi) They also felt that the slip clutch on my rotary cutter needed to be loosened further to relieve the shock to the tranny when I find those rocks/stumps/logs etc. (the dealer had re-adjusted the slip clutch after the first break) They also added an over running clutch to the pto to slow the wear on the pto brake. In the final analysis.......NH and the dealer stood firmly behind the product, but I now will have to decide whether or not to buy the extended warranty. I would also suggest the over running clutch to anyone who uses a "brush hog" or any implement that continues to turn the PTO after it has been dis-engagd.

Did they give you any written description of what they repaired? I'd be very interested in any part numbers for failed parts. I'm sure they'll stand "firmly behind their product", i.e., until the warranty expires.

I'm not sure about a NH PTO brake, but the brakes on some older large tractors (JD 4030 & MF 2695) were activated when you pulled the PTO lever actually past the detent for disengaged. If you did not pull back the lever that far, the brake would not engage and the PTO was free to freewheel.

Is it possible to adjust a NH PTO brake to act this way? That way, you would still have the use of the brake in case of emergency (an over-ride clutch would render the brake useless.)

Jim......I'm running a Land Pride RCR2572 (medium duty) rotary cutter. Chris...........no I didn't recieve a written description of the repair (either time). The New Holland tech and the dealer conferenced called me and described the repair over the phone. Both repairs involved replacing a "twisted and broken shaft" according to NH, in the hst. The pto brake description offered to me described the brake as internal and not subject to operator adjustment.

For what its worth, the PTO on the tc40 should be plenty strong for the mower you describe,An overide clutch really should not be needed, did the dealer recommend that ?sounds more like the shaft that has broken on yours (and a couple others is a little soft)curious to see how it holds up from here on in. That is a good tractor and should give you many hours of trouble free service-
