My wife and I used to go up to the falls between Christmas and New Years for the festival of the lights. The falls were always partially frozen. One year, it was -20f. We had a hotel close to the falls. The wind shifted overnight and the mist from the falls came over the hotel parking lot, locking our car in a very thick layer of ice. It took me 45 minutes just to get into the trunk, crawl through the back seats, start the car and let the heater run for half an hour. Then I was able to punch the ice and get it to fracture enough to get the doors open. Great fun. The falls are beautiful in the winter. The lights at night, everything in the area covered in ice is quit spectacular. I recommend everyone see that in winter at least once in their life.

The pictures are great but living near it makes me feel just that much colder :)

I have seen photos of the fall completely frozen with no water movement. I think they were from early 1900's.

I reckon that ice is pretty, but it makes me glad we only visited Niagara Falls on Oct. 17, 1991, and May 29, 1993; no ice then.

Niagara freezing over is not all that uncommon. I was in the upper peninsula in IIRC 1957-8, the reiver was fronzen at the Soo Locks. I got a ticket for "parking on the gass" at the base and had towait till spring ot see that, after the packed down snow melted, yes, I had been on the grass with my front wheels. Of course at the time of the ticket those front wheels were at least a foot in the air.
