Local skydiving center sees man land without opening his parachute.

Man dies in skydiving accident | KXAN.com

Locally, this is our second strange death in two weeks. The other person drowned when water swept her car into a creek upside-down.

Your quote reminded me of their quote:

"If riding in an airplane is flying, then riding in a boat is swimming. If you want to experience the element, then get out of the vehicle."

I flew jump pilot for a while. With the door removed pilot has to wear a parachute. I was asked if I knew how to use it. When I declined instruction, they asked why and I replied I had no intention of leaving a perfectly good airplane.
About a year later the jump master I was working with had a problem with both main 'chute and reserve. He was luckier, only broke both legs.

I have only skydived once, did the 6 hour class thing where you are actually on your own once the two instructors you jump with let go. That high up you have no sense of falling, just a really strong wind. I think the last 50ft or so was probably the scariest where you had a real awareness of the ground rushing up. Letting go of the plane was really cool as well. Overall I thought scuba diving was much more interesting.

Jumping from a plane and something goes wrong, seems a bit to "permanent" to me:laughing:

My FIL taught Jump in 101st and 82nd , he says it's "no big deal after the 1st jump" and da&% sure the " quickest way to the bar"

Jumping, as in "parachuting" is absolutely the second greatest thrill in the the entire world:now, if you have to ask what is first, then you sure as **** have been missing out on a whole lot.

@Western, your FIL was a great man, I served also in the 82d stateside, also the 173d in Nam. Give him my regards, from one jumper to another.

I parachuted about 20 times in the Army. Loved the ride down. It is so peaceful and quiet but the landings were always horrible. Driving into the ground at 20-25 MPH doesn't feel good. It makes it worse when trees are in the way.

Parachutes the clubs use are maneuverable and you can glide in nice a softly and would be more fun than the old military type chutes. My BIL wanted me to go up with him at a club someplace for his first try, and I declined. I figured the more you go up, statistically speaking, the better chance of a chute not opening. Gravity sucks.
