There is a BIG problem with the RITA data linked in this thread, it does not agree with the financial reports of the RR operators like BNSF, UP and CSX for 2008.

According to THEIR annual reports, these THREE RRs used more #2D than the RITA indicates for rail less AmTrac.

Also, the reporting RITA does is for all motor fuels combined, there is no way to take away from their data motor diesel (on-road uses).

Well, I'd be interested in seeing your numbers and where you got them. The RITA chart linked to is in gallons. BNSF, UP and CSX annual financial reports are available on line and I can find nothing in any of them referring to gallons, only dollars.
