What do you suppose is wrong with my Polaris 500? It won't go into four wheel drive when you push the little button. The little icon comes on the screen, but only the rears drive. Also when I start it a little wrench icon shows on the screen for a little while.

i am pretty sure that little wrench is a self diagnostic thing telling you that there is something wrong with the atv. the 08 rhino's have it too but they give you a code that pops up on the panel too and you then look up the code and it tells you what part is broken. did you check all the fuses ? get a volt meter and check to see if you got juice going to the front dif, when you push the button . if you do then you know the problem is probably in the diferential.but it sounds like a eletrical thing to me.

My wrench comes on when start up. I just can't remember to reset it. Wrench means ( on mine) that it's time to be serviced. oil chenag , lube, etc, Your all whell drive problem could be one of your sensors located dow by the hub or in the hub. hard to tell. Could be in the electrical circuit to the awd case (front end)

update:
I got a recall notice from Polaris that the ECU--the "brain" is being recalled on a certain years machines because of malfunction. My dealer put a new brain in it and said that on some machines the 4wd doesn't work, others engine doesn't work right, others overheat indicator is malfunctioning, overheats etc.
Anyway, now 4wd works, although it may not work right in reverse; it's supposed to engage when you push the yellow button in, in reverse which activates the "slow" function.
So it looks like it was the brain
Thanks all

I used to have an xplorer 400 4X4. I had the clutches apart before, they are an electromagnetic unit with little rollers held in place by a spring, the rollers stay inside the keeper in two wheel drive, when it is engaged the electrical current expands them to lock the hub. I also did the reverse button overide and hi-low beam modification to keep high beam and low beam lights on at hi beam. I had the Titan or ITP 589 mud tires[ six ply] hard riding but good traction. plowking
