When I was a kid (in another century), my dad worked for a company that had an old chain drive Mack dump truck. He would borrow it occasionally to haul stuff to the dump. It was noisier than heck and probably didn't go over 35 MPH. To dump the bed, two guys put this crank with about a 4' long handle into it an with one on each side raised the dump. Took about 10 minutes of sweating!

And not a DISK BRAKE in sight. They probably relied more on their brains and common sense to keep them safe, unlike today.

Just to compare some older technologies from different parts of the World. 
A few soviet dumpers I had been driving in my youth, early 80's. I was working mainly in the gravel-pits with them.
MAZ-503A (product of Belarus) - 6 tonnes bed, V6 engine, noisy inside a cab, high vibration, insufficient cab heating in winter.
KrAZ-256 (product of Ukraine) - 12 tonnes bed, V8 engine, extremely noisy inside a cab, very high vibration, very great turning radius.
KamAZ-5511 (Product of Russia under USA licence) - 10 tonnes bed, V8 very smoky engine (insufficiently burnt fuel), much more comfortable comparing to both previous, semi-floating cab, better brakes, weak 1st final drive.
And ... a High school after all that.
