A friend of mine, on a neighboring farm, bought a 5' KK rotary cutter when Quality stores were going out of business. The gearbox no longer transfers power to the blade shaft.

When he contacted KK he was told that since he bought it from Quality while they were going out of business there was no warranty and there was nothing they would do.

I also purchased some things at their sale and was told that the going out of business sale would in no way affect the warranty, Quality was going out of business not KK and that KK would stand behind their product.

Has anyone else had problems with KK warranty, or any possible solutions. It is not like we were out to scam someone at the sale and we knew there would be no dealer to help if there was support needed, but did not think that the manufacturer would refuse to warrant their product.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

A warranty is only as good as the dealer. You might try a TSC store they are KK largest customer and have some clout with KK. They can order order the parts if you want to fix it out of your own pocket. Any KK dealer would likely do the same.

Thanks Mark. Thats where I aimed him. We have 3 TSC's within about 45 min drive and they are helpful. It just makes him mad that KK won't warranty.

Most traditional dealers detest TSC because they take away most of their small parts and small implements business. I have one 2 miles from my family's dealership. Auctions are another place that you have less of a chance getting a warranty claim processed. Typically KK, Caroni, Howse (HICO), Cosmo, WAC, & Leinbach are sold at these retail stores like TSC. These MFG companies did not build their businesses on service but Price. At times these MFG's quality is not consistant. Yes their stuff will work just realize when one purchases from auctions & retail stores they do not usually have a service shop in the back to fix a warranty claim.

I purchased a 5' KK rotary cutter this spring from TSC. No problems at all, so far. I never looked at the manufacturers warrentee. How long is it and is it parts and labor?

I was missing the retainer clip that keeps the pto shaft on the gearbox on the event if the shear bolt goes, it doesn't fly off the shaft. The manual did not show this clip or provide a part number. Figured that would be nothing but a headache explaining to someone at TSC. A phone call to KK, had 2 of them out in the mail to me.

Who did your friend contact at KK? I've never heard of such a thing regarding KK! Does he still have the receipt? Did he hit something with it or did it just stop working? If he didn't hit anything and still has his receipt to prove it's still within the 1 year warranty, then have him call 1 800 228-2308 and explain the problem. Where he bought it has nothing to do with it as long as it was a new mower.

Before you buddy goes off the deep end... have him check for a "sheared... shear bolt"...

Also, in some parts of the country... Quality has been out of business for more than a year... and KK only has a 1 year warranty...

If it's less then 1 year old and he has a proper receipt to prove it... and it truly has a warranty problem... he won't have any problem getting it serviced... but have him document everything from here on out... phone calls, written communications, etc.

Mark we realized Quality would be no help if there was a problem, there were only a couple people there that new what parts were anyway. We have good dealers for all of the big 3 and do business with all of them, but going out of business prices for something to trim up fence rows etc. was to too much to pass up. Maybe not as good of deal as first thought. He probably won't buy KK again.

I hope that's how things work out. I didn't get any clips either, I just rigged something up. I may call and check on clips.

I'm not sure who he spoke with Danny. I gave him the 800 # and he will try again Monday. He didn't hit anything, didn't hear anything at least. We bought in January so it really doesn't even push the year. I agree on the warranty he bought new from a retailer, not used or from a second hand deal. Thanks for the number.

John, I am not sure, but I think/hope that's the first thing he did. He has farmed his whole life and teaches auto diesel at our tech center. He knows his way around drive systems. I will mention checking the shear pin if for no other reason than to get him fired up a little. If that does turn out to be the problem, I'll have one on him for a while.

I will tell him to make sure he writes down everything. It hasn't been close to a year, so he should be covered. I also may tell him to stick with it, he may just take no for the answer and fix it with replacement parts.

Thanks again all you guys for the quick response.

was it a KK machine or a machine made by KK with another name on it. there is a difference. I called TSC about brush hog and they said they had a KK I was looking for. Drive ther to find the mower they said they had had TSC on it instead of KK and was made cheaper. When I asked them about it they said it came off a KK truck. So be careful of what you buy.

TAB,

ddl has a good point about the actual name on it. If it was made by KK and branded as "QF", your friend might be out of luck. He needs to find the actual terms of the warranty that was offered with it. On the other hand, as long as you have a valid receipt to show the purchase date, the terms of that warranty have to be met. If QF was the warranter, then part of their bankruptcy/going out of business would have been allowing for maintenance to be done by somebody. There are laws governing warranties, and they are actually much stronger than most people think. The bad news is, whoever took over the warranty work could charge shipping to/from a repair facility. The bottom line is, the terms of the original warranty, plus any modifications authorized by the court, will prevail. His best bet is to get in touch with KK and hope to find somebody willing to back it up. Many companies that OEM items for "store brand" products will, in cases like this, be willing to help out in some way.

If it was sold as a KK product, and nothing was done that violates the warranty terms, they have to honor it. All you have to do is prove the purchase date.

Good luck.

Kevin
