Need a few ideas. Some of you remember my thread about the TPH trailer mover I built. Well, I'm finally getting around to fab up some sort of linkage or whatever, to keep it from rising on its own if the front of the trailer decides to raise. Was thinking of welding a grab hook on the upright, and use a chain, but can't see how that would work. Thinking of some sort of a sliding arm that would mount solidly to swinging drawbar, but still allow a little verticle movement of the hitch to lift tongue of trailer. Confusing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif You should see it from my angle. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know a picture would be worth a thousand words but since I don't have the camera right now ....I'll see how confused I can get you in 50 words...
I welded a receiver hitch to the bottom of my winch. I had also attached another receiver hitch to my drawbar. To accomplish what I think you are talking about, I drilled a hole in the back of the receiver on the winch to take a bolt. Then I put a standard 2" drop hitch into the drawbar receiver with clevis loop through the hole. Then I ran a couple/three links of chain between the clevis on the drawbar and the bolt on the winch. I built it to keep a woods trailer from riding up and haven't tested that but when I try to raise the TPH it trips the relief so it seems to do the function.
good luck

SkogenMe; Thanks for the reply. After I posted, I thought I'd do a little experimenting. I solved my own problem, and maybe someone else can do the same. Thi TPH trailer mover is very handy, but it was pointed out, that basically, if you had a tail heavy trailer, you could run into problems. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My solution was to weld a grab hook inside the upright channel, just behind where the top link attaches, and run a chain thru a shackle in the swinging drawbar, and up to the grab hook. That way, you can still run under a trailer coupler and raise the TPH, but you are limiting the upward movement if things go awry. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

photo with limiting chain attached. This just happened to be the piece of chain I had handy to play with. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

John,

Well, now that you have it figured out and completed, (BTW - nice job) I probably shouldn't even throw this out.

I was thinking of a heavy duty spring (like the vertical ones on a garage door but at the length you need) attached pretty much the way you did it with the chain. It could stretch some but would limit travel if the back of the trailer was light. You can also stretch the spring when using the 3PH.

How about.. um.. a simple drawbar stay? They have been around since the ford 9n came out in 1939!!

You don't have to re-invent the wheel!.. tsc sells the adjustable 2-part stay for less than 20 bucks.

See the two pieces that go from the lift arms to the top link .. those are stays. They also make a drawbar lock to keep the drawbar from rotating so you can simply mount a trailer hitch ball to your 11-hole drawbar.

BUT with the drawbar stay, you can't back up under that trailer load of dirt, firewood etc, lift the 3pth and drive off. I have been using a homemade unit on my JD for about 6 years and have never had a problem with a light tonque, just watch how you load the trailer, you wouldn't drive down the road without tonque weight would you? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
