As most know, we have had virtually no snow all winter, so my Bobcat TLB has been sitting since November, outside. I just bought a small CMM to go into my garage "shop" (if I told you the price I may get arrested...). I figured I would use the loader backhoe with some pallet forks to unload the machine.

So I go to start it up this morning and it started right up, except that the oil pressure light stayed on. So i shut it down. I thought maybe the oil pressure switch is frozen, so I removed it and ran it briefly to see if oil would emerge from where the oil pressure sensor came out. Nothing, NADA.

I am posting this in this forum, since the bobcat one is not very active. The motor is a D1105 Turbo diesel.

Has anyone had something shear or become obstructed in their oil pump system ? I am wondering how much tear down is needed to replace the oil pump ?

Seems odd. Did you remove the oil filter and maybe replace it. I would wonder if the oil pump lost its prime.:confused2:

Well, today went up to 60f and thawed everything out. By the time I got home with the machine at 3:50pm and I went to start it up, it ran perfect. I have never had that happen before and I thought I was in serious sh#t...

I did dig out my manual for the B200 loader backhoe, and the oil pump is direct drive off the crank with a substantial sized set of splines, so it really does appear that the pump lost its prime over 4 months and then with the high oil viscosity if was unable to lift the oil from the sump.

I think that I will remove that pressure switch again and investigate the thread, I suspect is it 1/8 or 1/4 NPT. It may be a good idea for the future to have a way to pump oil into that port to prime the pump from the delivery side back into the sump.

An oil pan heater would also probably be a good idea to get the stuff to flow on such mornings. I see an oil and filter change coming up. I only have 150 hours on since the last one, but oil is cheap...

It is possible that you had condensation that froze in a critical spot that either stopped flow to the pressure switch or blocked oil pump suction line.

If it sat for a long time, maybe all the oil drained down to the pan, inluding what was in the oil filter. If you have ever changed the oil and not filled the filter, you always have no oil pressure for a few seconds.

After all that, I did manage to successfully unload the new toy... I had to load up the loader cylinders as far as they would go with the forks tilted down slightly, then use the curl to actually lift it. That way I just barely managed to get it out the bed of the pickup. Once clear of the tailgate I lowered it to a few inches off the deck and drove it over to the garage. There I set it down and picked up the pallet with a pallet trolley rated for 5000lb.

The only difficult bit was crossing the threshold into the garage (about a 6" long "ramp") that I got the larger steering wheels over no problem, but the small wheels at the ends of the forks were not co-operating. Finally used a 6 foot section of 1" water pipe as a lever to "encourage" it an inch at a time and then it was rolling on the garage floor. It was pouring with rain a few hours later, so I was thankful the planets were in alignment for once...

The machine below is a very similar model except it is CNC controlled, whereas mine is operated by hand. And mine has a light brown paint instead of the neon blue... Now I have to figure out how to upgrade a computer that is running Win NT while maintaining my license.... And start looking for a probe head and some basic probes.

How great to have a CMM in your home shop. Have your own work to put it to use or contract out?

I had a car that had a major condensation problem. The first winter I changed oil on Saturday and drove 320 miles Sunday evening to my apartment. Next morning I started it up to drive to work and the oil light was on. Called the local GM dealer and had it towed. Got it back a week later with no explanation than they had to replace most of the valve train. Forward to the next winter. Made that 320 mile drive home on Friday night. Saturday my daughter drove the car to work and when she got home said, "Dad, the oil light was on when I used your car today.". Daughters, gotta love them. Still under warranty so had the local dealer tow it off Monday. When the tow truck driver arrived he remarked, "Another one of those Quad 4 engines?". When I told him it was, he said that condensation was a problem, and remarkably long trips were as bad as short hops. He said that most of his tows were after the driver had run it until the engine seized. Water got deep enough that it blocked the oil pickup. I talked with a GM service rep who told me they thought they had a fix but they had put the fix on mine the first time and obviously it didn't do the job. They gave me a deal to exchange for a car with a different engine. Not saying your engine has a similar defect but striking similarity that the oil light is on when very cold and no problem when the weather warms.

I have run the machine in much colder conditions with no problem. I think the issue is that we basically had no snow this year, so I didn't need to run the machine once to plow out the drive or the road. With that I think the pump lost its prime and couldn't re-prime with the cold oil.

I think when the warmer weather hits I am going to pull the sump and install a heating element in the sump to warm the oil. I will see if I can get it as close to the pickup as possible. I also got a heating element to go in the intake, but it draws a LOT of power. That will be reserved for "emergencies only".

Yes, I am collecting stuff to have some independence once we make the move to Colorado. My lathe is currently torn down and the bed goes for way grinding in a couple of weeks. Its a heavy Sheldon 14x40. Mill needs some tooling and the inverter installed. Surface grinder needs a little work on the sticky hydraulics. Custer county is relatively remote and I will probably be the only person in the valley with a CMM.
