I have a noise like finger nails on a black board when using FWD and going down hill. Left side only.

Any wire wrapped around something?
Only when moving in 4wd, and going forward? not reverse? different when turning? Same if front end jacked up so no load on front tires?
Really interested in knowing more about the noise. Assume fluid is up to full on dipstick.

The noise is only in FWD moving for wards or back. Flat, up or down hill. Really loud on down hill. No wire. I can't jack up the front end and move the wheel as all wheels turn together.
The 4400 Utility has a shaft that goes from the main drive to each wheels so that the ground clearance is higher. This gives extra bearing and gears but it does not sound like a bearing noise.

Sounds like a u-joint. Not familiar with that specific model but the u-joint for the LF axle is probably getting bad. If it is really bad you might see play in it with prybar or see rust coming out from one or more of the caps.

I'm a bit puzzled what you are calling the short shaft. Here is a pic of the front axle assembly and it is driven by a shaft coming forward from the transmission. Within the axle assembly are some shafts that drive each hub left and right.
Have you checked oil level in the front axle assembly and it is full on the dip stick? If not, maybe hearing a seal going out, or maybe a bearing.

Take pictures of the R&R of the axle. Will be hoping and praying for your success.

Pulled the tire and the finial drive of the Left side. Very fine metal dust and oil mixed. Cleaned all bearing and other pieces with degreaser.
In the manual it says to set the T12 gear at the lower end of the spindle shaft to .022 ". It moves about 3/8 of an". This is the way I found it. Do they really want spacers that move it that high? The said the backlash should be .006 to .008. Is this the space between the finial drive gear and the T12 lower spindle gear teeth?
All parts look good except the final drive gear (the big one). It is not shinny.
I am the Virgin Islands so can't run down the JD dealer.
Open for suggestions.

I checked the backlash by moving the spindle T12 gear to both ends of it's movement and got .025".
I cleaned every thing and spun the two finial drive bearings. They sounded quiet and did not have any play. I put it back together and still have the loud noise.
I now believe it is coming from a bearing. There is a roller and a ball bearing. Do I replace both? Should I check the spindle bearings?
