Last year I installed a set of remotes on my MF135 to rake hay. The rake cylinder has a single hose. I use it in the upper outlet on the remotes. When I let the rake down, it is very slow and there is a noise from the remotes that is very irritating, but we use it anyway. (The same noise occurs when the rake has been fully raised, until you let go of the control handle.) I assume that it has something to do with a bypass. What can I do to correct this?

The noise you hear is probably the relief going off. You can test this by installing a gage, and measuring what the relief pressure is. Leave the gage in place, then, look at the gage when you operate the rake. If you hear the noise when the pressure gets to the relief setting, you have found the source of the noise. The only way to avoid the noise is to not hold the levers past the point of full extension. Even though it is a single action cylinder, if the load of the rake is high enough, you could exceed the relief pressure. The relief pressure might not be set correctly.

Welcome to TBN:D

The noise you hear is definitely the relief valve. You are hearing this because you are using a SA (single acting) cylinder with only one hose on a valve made for a DA (dual acting) cylinder with two hoses. Basically when you operate the valve to retract the cylinder fluid is trying to go out of the other port on the valve and it can't-so the system goes into relief.

There is nothing wrong with operating the way you are, but if you want to fix it then you will need to replace the SA cylinder with a DA one.

What about opening up the orifice at the cylinder just a bit?

Thanks for all the input. Thanks for the link, JJ, but those are not my remotes. Maybe I can send a picture of mine. They are second hand and I didn't get any instructions. There is an adjustment screw on them, but I figured that was to change the pressure.

I was at my MF dealer today and described the noise and he said all I would need to do was open the hole a bit in the orifice at the cylinder and it would let the rake down faster, but to only use a bit that was one size larger than the original hole size.

I wanted to run it by you folks before I did it, though. Everyone seems to agree that this will not help, so I won't do it. The rake is very slow coming down and the noise drives you nuts after an hour or two. I just ain't right!

Replace the SA cylinder with a DA cylinder-it will solve all your problems;)

Edit:
Drilling the hole may make the cylinder lower faster, but it will do NOTHING to stop the noise. I explained why the noise is happening in my first response, and nothing short of plugging a hose into that other port will stop it. Now you could run a hose from that port into the tank...then fluid could flow from it when the rake lowers.

Here is a picture of my remote cylinder control valve. It is a Cross, but there is no picture of it on the Cross website, and they have no manuals available for downloading, anyway. Could someone tell me if the adjustment at the rear might allow me to use my single acting cylinder v-rake, or am I s.o.l?

I guess I wasted my time replying before....

PS. Those cast pipe fittings are only rated for 150psi.
