Ford 1720
Hello everyone. New to the forum.

I have a ford 1720 SSS and when I pull up the lever to engage the four wheel drive I get a lot of trans noise - very loud in 4th gear-high range and not normal. The noise gets louder the faster I go. Full speed the trans sound like it screaming at me.

When I switch to medium or low range the noise seems to stop - or maybe its there but not noticeable.

When I switch back to 2wd it goes away and sounds normal.

Any idea where the problem might be?

Didnt think you were supposed to engage four wheel drive in high gear?

Do you have the correct size tires on it front and rear. If you do not it can cause the drive line to bind up on hard ground.What are you doing that you are in high range in 4x4. I would not recomend driving down the road in 4x4. Make sure the front drive shaft has plenty of grease if yours is greasable.

@Hooked

yes factory size tires, only run on grass. Makes noise in the mudd too.

Defiantly a mechanical problem and coming out of the trans case. Had it at the dealer for them to look at it and said it probably would cost 3k-4K to fix

That sounds crazy high! What all are they going to do or replace for that price? I understand transmission/differential/transfer case repairs can be intensive on labor time but that sounds way high. Again, it could be a fair asessment, but I am curious to know what all you are getting for that amount of loot?

Did anyone look at the front driveshaft cover? They sometimes get bent and contact the driveshaft. The shaft still turns in 2wd but might flex differently when not driving the wheels? Swag

UPDATE: Discovered that the slide gear on the pinion was damaged. Replacing the slide gear Fixed the problem. No more noise when in 4wd.

Fantastic! I was also going to comment on the fluid. Looks rather thick - not supposed to be gear oil!
