Hi all,
Is anyone familiar with the Northern Forest Inventory and Analysis Program? I just received a letter and a couple of flyers requesting permission to include an acre or so of my woods in the study. Apparently this is a USDA program in the 24 upper midwest and northeast states. As I understand it so far, they want to place a marker to locate, measure and study trees in an approx. 1 acre section of land.
Normally I would take all the free advice, assuming they give me any, I can get but two things concern me. First, the letter, while including apparent USDA pamphlets, comes from an individual in Minnesota (I'm in Kansas) and not the USDA. I guess that makes some sense as the USDA is probably contracting out the work. Second, I simply don't trust the federal government to just do a 5 to 10 year (3 or 4 site visits) study and then leave me alone. On the plus side, the acre section they have selected (they included a generic aerial photograph, looks like a satellite photo) is right next to a neighbor who, to put it politely, is a collector of items others consider worthless. In other words, they would be more likely to give him crap than me as my ground is virgin with one exception of a very old inactive, water well in that area and some invasive trees (stink trees) that I'm in the process of eradicating. (The eradication is slow work as I'm cheap, using just a chain saw and glyphosate to clean up the sprouts.)
I think I'll call the phone number they gave and get some more info.
I'm off to the ground to do more cleanup cutting but I'll be back tonight. Thank you very much for any insight you can give me.
