I've used Norton SystemWorks a long time, and have been happy with it, but yesterday, I ran the "Liveupdate" which downloaded and installed two updates of some kind. I run it frequently with no problems. However, this time was different. Outlook Express no longer works unless I turn off the virus scan for incoming and outgoing e-mail. I've tried everything I can think of with no improvement. If I open Outlook Express, it shows "connecting" for a long time, then I get an error message "A time-out occurred while communicating with the server, Account:'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net'; Protocol POP3, Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, Error Number 0x800CCC19". I can get to my incoming e-mail through Comcast's home page, and everything works normally if I simply turn off the e-mail virus scanning. Has anyone else encountered this after an update lately?

Sounds like they added a firewall and have the email ports blocked for some reason. Either that or MS has updated their firewall rules, and it is a coincidence. Check your firewall settings.

I had the same problem and called my Internet Provider e mail service technicians and they walked me through the fix. I don't remember what it was that needed to be changed, but it was in the email send/receive settings. Norton now scans both incoming and out going e mail for better protection.
As a side note, if you watch the Staples ads this time of the year, you can purchase the 2005 Norton products and after rebates, they will be free for previous Norton users. They can still be used for one full year and all updates are included. You can't beat the price of FREE!!!!!

I have the Microsoft Windows XP firewall turned off and am using Norton's Personal Firewall. I've experimented and found that disabling either the firewall or the e-mail virus scanning makes it work, but if both of them are enabled, no go.

Junkman, I've called Comcast before and they told me how to fix similar problems. This time I went on their "live chat" line and the person there just told me to contact Norton. I'll probably contact Comcast again and figure there's a good chance I'll get a different person and have the same luck you did.

The other odd thing I've encountered since the latest update is when I shut down or restart the computer. I first get a dialogue box that some program called "ccApp" is closing and then it's a long, long wait for Windows to shut down. Of course I have no idea what "ccApp" is.

"ccApp" is Norton's real-time protection agent that is running all the time and ironically is what controls the email checking. Sometimes it doesn't get the message to stop running when you shut down your computer. This is why you get the message about ccApp closing. If you hit enter or click on "End Now", ccApp will close and the computer will finish shutting down. I don't know of a way to keep that message from coming up as the computer is shutting down.

Dave, if you haven't noticed, I'm easily confused by computers. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the 'clue' that I have been looking for that has puzzled me as well, when trying to get 'outlook express' to work. I thought it was a different problem, but the NAV things fits.
I had serious problems late July when I thought all I was doing was getting a new upgrade subscription of NAV but opted for the Norton Internet Security version for an extra $10. Then all heck broke loose after loading it. Dragged my Win98 system to almost a standstill. So Symantec (Norton) folks said to uninstall it for a return. When removing, it took out my System.ini file and I was flat 'broke down'. After a long grueling period of getting a second hard drive, installing it as the Master and loading the sytem on it, I ordered and installed the 2005 NAV for protection. It also didn't like the Win98 operating system, and after some long hours with Symantec, it finally worked. In the meantime, my e-mail software could no longer be updated, so I tried Outlook Express - only to have the same thing happen that you described. After finally getting another e-mail software loaded (Thunderbird which I like better than Outlook Express anyway), I found out I needed to shut down the NAV scanning of outgoing email.
You helped me understand a little bit more about what was going on. Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

PS - I don't WANT to know even this much about computers /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yep Bird, I can't remember what the last line read, I have to copy/paste.
My NortonInternet Security icon started flashing red/yellow. When I attempt to run live update an error message appears.
Symantec has answered my e-mail cry for help and sent me to a site that took me over 40 minutes to complete all the instructions to FIX /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif the problem.

I thought I followed the directions and all seemed to be completed but when I finished and tried live update I got still another error message saying that another program is running and live update will not finish.

I'm still seeing the red/yellow flashing.

The two viruses listed are W32.Esbot.A and W32.Zotob.E
I found them and trashed them manually.

Good luck to all who are having problems of any kind with computing.
I'd rather untangle a back-lash any day than try to solve computer problems.
