I wish i would have taken a pic of the original but i forgot :( It reminded me of the air cleaner from the 64 Dart I'm working on with my brother. lol... The worst part was when taking out the element it was really hard not to have dust go right down the intake. Also mitered joints are disruptive to smooth air flow.

So I decided to upgrad to something more appropriate to the dust conditions it will be operating in. I calculated my engine airflow requirements at about 95 CFM. Then I went to Donaldson catalog to see what i could find. I wanted something that could still fit in the footprint of the original and still be tucked under the hood. I also decided to get a air cleaner with a safety filter for extra protection and ended up picking one of Donaldson FPG series and this model flows 110 to 145 cfm depending on amount of vacuum pulled.

Yuchai is the only known dozer in the world that takes their engine intake air from inside the engine compartment, where the fan blows directly into it, citing "compact structure". Ugh! I call it lazy and ignorant. That's a great mod you did and your engine will thank you for it. I looked at that filter but it wouldn't work for me because of my manifold arrangement, so I went for basically the same filter mounted outside. Imho, all you need to do to complete your mod is make a hole in the hood directly over the filter intake and install a removable dust/rain cap (mine isn't removable). I had to mount mine high because of the front end loader attachment. I used rubber sewer elbows and PVC pipe from Home Depot.

When I did my mod there was no Amazon Prime, otherwise I would have went that way.

it looks great bob! you did a good job. and yeah i'm on the fence about cutting a hole in the hood and adding a removable top. I'd like to use some type of pre cleaner. I was hoping to have room under the hood but that didn't work out. I'll have to see how fast my new air filter loads up with dust. I'm just not to keen on having to remove a pre cleaner every time i wanna open the hood to check oil/coolant. But i'm definitely open it.

Do you have to open the hood to check oil and coolant, although it's not a bad idea. I have a cutout on the lower right corner of the side screen for the oil, and I can see the coolant level in the coolant recovery reservoir through the screen on the right side. The pre-cleaner could just slip on/off.
