Hi all

First time poster here. I am thinking about buying a Norwood Skid-Winch for my property. It will be light (non-professional) use, mostly hauling logs for on-site milling and firewood. Generally 20" diameter or less. Has anyone had experience using one of these? Can you provide some insight? Any other tractor-mounted skidders to recommend?

Welcome to TBN!
Don't know Norwood brand. Have Igland winch noted in my signature. It's been flawless. Love it big time. very sturdy, gets job done.

Exactly which skidding tool/winch are you referring to?

Over the years, Norwood has offered several different winches... I can tell you, for 20" tree's, you need a fairly HD winch, as that's a fairly big log that isn't easy to drag out...

Check out the Wallenstein thread that's still going on in here for some picts..

Try a search for "logging winch" on here.

Two brands that are very popular in my area are Farmi and Fransgard. There are others that are probably equally good. I own a Uniforest brand myself. Not quite as widely known as some of the others, but it has worked out well for me.

My impression of most Norwood equipment I've seen is that it's more suited for lighter-duty work. I have to say, I'm a little suspicious of anyone selling a winch that doesn't disclose the rating for pull strength

Suppose it's a hydraulic capstan winch? Would advise you to look at more conventional logging winches that has a very long history in hard logging use and is a very proven design.

A 20" tree is also a pretty good load for your Boomer, so be careful until you get a feel for what you are doing. (I would bring a tree that size out in 2 pieces.)

Edit; I just read your post over on the Forestry Forum. Is your tractor 55 hp, or a NH 35 as indicated in your signature?

It's a 55 - I'll have to fix that over there. And thanks for then advice - I agree that two pieces is a good idea on the bigger logs.

Thanks

I will check it out. I spoke to a fellow at Norwood. He describes it as a light duty winch and says that it is rated at 2000 lbs. I will take a look at the others, but it may be that for my usage - occasional usage for logs on my property - a light duty winch would be all I need. Still checking around though.

Thanks for responding.
