this evening about 7 i had just gone into my computer room when the bride yelled for me, WHAT IS THAT? i looked out the kitchen window across my corner field and across the intersecting road(500 ft) ther wer flame shooting up the side of my neihbors garage, called him, no ans. so to be safe called vol. fire dept. then grabed a dry chem extingusher off garage wall and raced over there, had most of it out but extinguser ran out(this is a comerical type) then the fire dept got there and finished the job. seems like my neighbor, had an open top plastic garbage can filled, then next to that he set a big box filled and crammed with christmas wrapping paper, and next to that he set a pail with hot ashes he took from his wood burning stove. THEN THEY LEFT! next thing u know they are alll burning. the wood on the garage was just catching good when i got there but no real dammage., except for the burnt paint. NOW my question is why would somone be that careless? and to compound it this guy is a vol. fireman and a former fire commisioner. I FEAR FIRES, AND JUST WANTED TO REMIND ALL FOLKS TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL. WILL GET OFF MY SOAPBOX NOW.

One might think that he wanted it to burn?????? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif He wouldn't be the first person to burn down his own house deliberately!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We read stories just like this(sans wrapping paper) several times a year around here. Hot embers in plastic pail, hot embers in metal pail, but pail put in garage, hot embers in metal pail outside but pail put next to house, etc...

<font color="blue">I FEAR FIRES </font>

<font color="red"> ME TOO! </font>

But it is just common sense... sometimes people just have a lapse and that's all it takes.

Also,
A reminder that Christmas is a good time to give people 9V batteries for their smoke detectors... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

AM SURE that is not the case here.just a matter of not thinking, and this guy has done other dumb things. he just don't think and some day it will cost him /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That fellow is fortunate to have a neighbor like you. Go right ahead and preach fire safety to all of us, we can use reminders now and then. We had a group of family members over for Christmas and my wife insisted I fill our collection of tall glass oil lamps so we could have them lit for the guests. Before I even lit one I got out a large ABC fire extinguisher and made sure she knew where it was-- just in case I wasn't around if something went wrong. You can NEVER be too careful around any source of fire.
